finding files on my Hero

I hooked my phone to my PC, told it to treat it like a disk, copied a XL file to the "my Documents" folder, but can not seem to be able to get to files from my phone.

I presume by XL file you mean xls file (Excel)? Do you have Quick Office or similar installed to let you view those?

do you have an app to explore the file system?

try "astro" in the market. there many other similar apps too.
