Fiona Apple Cancels Tour To Be With Her Sick Dog

One thing for sure your dog will never leave or betray you. A true friend u can always trust..
Unlike cats... Haha or any other animal including human

Show business is real life for the people who make it happen. And for the people in the business who don't make the millions of dollars that the star does, the ones for whom the job is what gives them food clothing and shelter, it's a very real and very important matter.

To put it another way, if I'm given a choice about what species gets priority, it will be homo sapiens every time. I love my pets, but the well being of actual people takes precedence.

Speaking as someone who used to work for and with some pretty big name musicians, the qualities that you admire, acting aloof, blowing off the business part of the job and eccentric behavior is something that we have a term for. It's prima donna. The industry has more than enough of those.

I also question whether it's right to prolong the agony for the dog, which at 14 is at the end of its natural life span anyway.

Good point. If you have to stop and actually take care of the dog because it can't eat or move on its own, it's time to go bye bye at the vet's.

Today (actually yesterday in my time zone) ex-boxer Hector "Macho" Camacho was taken off of life support and promptly died. It was considered to be the humane thing to do. IJS

What does taking a brain dead person off of life support have to do with caring for a sick dog? Obviously there comes a time to let go, but she is there, we are not. I didn't see anything in the letter saying the dog was in major pain or couldn't eat. I'm sure she has the advice of veterinarians as to whether the dog is suffering or not. Besides, it's not about her trying to keep her dog alive forever, it's about her wanting to spend the last days with her friend.

How we treat animals or any being less fortunate than us speaks volumes about what type of person we are. Some love animals, some help the elderly, some the poor. All these acts not only produce good karma, but also help society as a whole. I see nothing wrong with what she did and the tour dates can be rescheduled.

I will openly admit that I am not a pet person and many love their pets as a child which is their right.

But being self-employed, if a customer booked me months in advance and then the day before I was to work for them, I said "I'm sorry but my dog is sick, and I can't make it. I'll reschedule you for 6 months down the road." They would be upset and probably find someone else to do the work I was to do.

To buy tickets for your favorite artist months in advance to find out at the last minute that it may or may not be rescheduled is hard to handle. If I was a fan I would have been very upset.
It was her choice and I don't think it was easy for her to do. But I also feel like some give "Celebrities" certain allowances they wouldn't give to their neighbor.

I've been to a few concerts that probably should have been cancelled. Just because I bought a ticket doesn't mean the band will perform up to snuff.
Saw the Smashing Pumpkins a lot of many years ago and Billy Corgan was sick, couldn't sing worth crap and the rest of the band just wasn't in to it. They only played a short set and poorly at that. Terrible show, not worth going to frankly. Same thing when I went to see Gary Numan a few years back, he had laryngitis and couldn't sing. That show wasn't the best either but I guess I didn't mind too much 'cause it was sort of worth it to me to see him no matter what.
If Fiona did tour instead of taking time to be with Janet it's entirely possible it would not have been a good tour. If the performer ain't in to being there or is too sick/drunk/stoned to perform the audience isn't getting what they paid for anyway. Cancel and move on, the show doesn't have to go on if there is no show to begin with.

One point is, what if rescheduling is not the right date for alot of the fans. I mean, they helping to pay those vet bills. I don't really know much about her but I'm sure she have money, so cancelling a bunch of concerts may not hurt her. But the fans are paying her bills.

I think there's too much missing information to be able to form an opinion one way or another. If the dog were simply in declining health at the end of it's natural life, Ms. Apple would have been able to schedule her tour to assure she'd be there at the animals final days. Her letter and actions indicate the dog has serious health issues that could be life-threatening.

What we don't know is if the dog is simply in decline but otherwise mobile and active or if it is in pain and unable to do much of anything ... or somewhere in between. If it's a case of the latter then I believe she should do the humane thing and put the dog down. It's a hard decision I've had to make before and will make again (I cannot imagine my life without a dog ... or dogs ... in it) but keeping the animal alive at all costs is selfish and cruel ... and here's the important part ... in my opinion.

She had the luxury to be able to even make this decision in the first place which would have relatively little impact to her lifestyle. I could make the same decision, but I don't have the assets to support myself for an extended period and I probably wouldn't be able to waltz back into my job when it was over.

In any case, there seem to be three distinct topics in this thread.

1. The value of companion animals vs. humans.
2. The morality or mercy of euthanasia.
3. Celebrity privilege.

All interesting topics, but better suited for the Politics & Current Affairs forum. If you wish to continue along these lines, I'll move it there.
