Firefox problems

Usually I can fix just about anything that comes up on my home computer but firefox is giving me a heck of a time.

Problem:
Some sites do not load at all (most important one being bank site)
No videos play at all

What i have done:
Checked flash player, ensured it was up to date
Checked to see all plugins were updated
Started firefox in safemode
uninstalled flashplayer and firefox and reinstalled both

is there anything else anyone can recommend to help with this? Its my dads computer and he wants his firefox and nothing else. This only occurs with firefox, chrome and ie work fine

I've finally given up on Firefox. IE10 and Chrome when on Windows 8, and Chrome when on Linux machine now.

No help, I know, other than to say I first noticed it with Facebook games and then Pogo (reported to me by my daughter).

I used to love everything Mozilla. I think they are playing it very safe with java/javascript/flash exploit protection these days.

I'm wondering how hard it would be to get your dad to switch to Chrome. I've used Firefox since its early days and it's gotten so bad lately that I've abandoned it for Chrome. Firefox grown too big and has a lot of memory leaks. Chrome is much faster and easier on system resources, in my opinion. Have him try Chrome and see if he's willing to switch.

3 people use the computer and each of them uses a different browser so its easier for them to get on their accounts so he doesn't want to. He has been using chrome to watch videos and check his bank account but doesn't want to use it permanently

IME some financial institutions have very specific browser requirements. Your dad might want to check that out before deciding what to do.

Financial institution websites usually work best with Internet Explorer 6 don't they?

its not due to browser requirements, because I can load it just fine on my computer with firefox.

Its a site using flash, I really think it has something to do with flash, but I don't know what to do, because I done a clean install of both the browser and flash

Well that's one less thing to worry about...

You know, I've recently noticed that all of my Firefox browsers show only "Shockwave Flash" as being installed, even after I updated Flash on them. MOF after the last update, it took me to the Flash test page, and everything ran just fine.

Here's the rub: I've been installing the Shockwave plugin as well as the Flash plugin out of habit for years. Maybe trying the Shockwave plugin will fix things for you. It can't hurt. Umm... :vroam:

Firefox works okay on my XP PC. It didn’t automatically import my IE8 bookmarks very well, but someday I’ll do that myself. And then I’ll install Thunderbird, move my zillion pointless emails there, and finally rid myself of IE and OE.

you can export your bookmarks if that'll help.

Ctrl+Shift+B > Import and Backup

I think mine (WinXP) are in C:\Document and Settings\9to5\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\thisthing.default\
then I have a bookmark.html and a bookmarkbackups directory.

I am reasonably pleased with Firefox on my Windows 7 PC but I have only been using it for a week. Before that I was a fan of Chrome and still am I suppose. Now I am playing with my first Android gadget, a Smart TV box running on Android 4.1.2. I have downloaded the Firefox for Android app and got the hang of the different format. However, I cannot find Modify Headers anywhere. Does anyone know where it is? I am aiming to access BBC iPlayer from Portugal. I have succeeded to do this on Windows 7 using the tunlr.net DNS fix. Now I want to do it on Android. Please can someone help?

When I run into this problem in Firefox, the problem is usually JavaScript, not flash. I run NoScript, so I deal with this a lot. You might need to install the JavaScript plugin.

Shouldn't JavaScript be handled by the browser without a plugin?
I'd say so. OTOH I don't see any reason why we shouldn't be free to replace the stock interpreter with a faster one from a 3rd party if we want to. :dontknow:

I just run what the browser brung...

Hmm... I'm not seeing anything javascript in my firefox's plugin/extensions/etc page?
And I know you can run javascript commands from the address bar and the console, which also makes me think it's handled as an internal component.

also, plus one for noscript ;)

It's FOSS, man. Get yourself git, download the latest source code, and comb through it for the JS code. I'll be right here waiting. ;)

Some sites do not load at all
Same problem here. Didn't manage to find out the solution - flash is updated and everything seems to work fine. I just open the site in another browser. Can't get my head around it. Update FF every time but it doesn't seem to work.

for me the most annoying problem is that Firefox will suddenly just stop connecting. then give an error that it is not connected to the internet (any version is doing this a lot on Kubuntu but often worked fine in Ubuntu Unity) and the only option is to close the entire browser and reopen it and lather, rinse and repeat. sometimes the site is loaded halfway and stops working, and right clicking a link and opening it in a new tab can recover your internet, and then closing the offending tab. other times, i get 'this site has a script that is unresponsive' (similar to an Android ANR) and i have to stop it and that sometimes breaks sites (facebook and youtube being two) as the 'script' in question is Adobe Flash Player. i didn't even install Flash this time as i hate the thing. it's right up there with Java with being so antiquated that it should die a slow, miserable death. what i used to need in Flash i have apps in iOS and Android to do the same job.

I think only Chromium is available for Linux (not the official Chrome but some half-functional early version) i tried to use it but for some reason it refuses to see that i am clearly online so nothing loads in it. i had to uninstall it as soon as i realized that.

unless i want to run IE inside Wine, the only options i have are Firefox (most compatible/stable other than the tab glitch) or the inferior Rekonq, which seems ten times slower than IE and lacks compatibility for many sites, and seems incapable of plugin support.
