firewall without rooting

Hello folks,

I am taking a dive in data arena. I know android uses crazy amount of data. Although my phones are old, I paid hard cash for both of them so I really do not have guts to root either of those phones.

I wonder, if there is any firewall for unrooted phones.

If not, does anyone have recommendation for tweaks so that my phone uses minimum data? Do I just turn of data all the time and turn it on only when I need it? How do the folks with restricted data work?

Thanks in advance.

I can firewall, but like most people in the UK have restricted data. However, I don't come even close to my limits.

How come? Well I don't stream music or video over cellular data, which are the biggest users. I don't rely on cloud storage for large files. And I'm not into social networking, so am not constantly uploading and downloading photos. For ordinary app data syncing (mail, calendar, etc) you don't need much - it's really if you are streaming stuff that you'll eat huge amounts (tethering can do so too). Android doesn't intrinsically use GB/month, though some users do.

Suggestions: only install big apps (eg large games) over WiFi, don't allow automatic updates to apps (or if you must, set to WiFi only), and check the sync settings in any potential data-hungry apps - increase intervals, set to only sync over WiFi, or set to only update manually.

Make sure you have a data monitoring app (built in to my phone, but I've had 3g Watchdog for years). And sure, turn off data when not using it :)
