firmware update was for the gps, but after it loaded and rebooted i noticed it "optomized apps".
the banding issue has disappeared for me over the last week. used the tablet solid for 3 hours yesterday afternoon and not a single issue. i did update the firmware last night too.
I thought my banding issue was gone but it is not. It only appears when I open the "recent apps" and only briefly. So, maybe a future update will address this. It is good to see how quickly they release updates, however.
Still a clean slate (sorry) regarding the banding issue, but the update did nothing for me about GPS, it is still non-existent. My tablet also says my 5g WIFI is not close enough to connect to even though I am sitting 2 feet from the router. 2.4G it finds all over the house.

TF201 does not support 5Ghz WiFi, that is correct.
And this update was actually for banding issue (on screen graphics bugs according to ASUS), not GPS. It did update GPS, but that won't fix the GPS problems since it cannot overcome casing design issues.
I received my TP on Jan 16th from gamestop online, updated to ICS right away. I did notice some banding a couple of times when exiting youtube or another app, but once I did the firmaware update I haven't seen the banding at all. I have no issues with my TP at all wifi is fine. Not sure about gps didn't test it before the update because I don't use it. But I tested immediately after and after about 5 mins outside I could see 12 satellites.
