Firmware updates on a different network (eg Vodafone to Giff Gaff)

OK, I have never bothered with rooting or anything, so apologies if this is an old question:

I am planning on getting a second hand Desire S which was sold on Vodafone. I know that Vodafone send their phones out unlocked, but what are the implications for firmware updates if you switch networks? Are the HTC Desire S's which Vodafone ship factory unlocked, or do they have Vodafone firmware?

Basically, I'm asking whether if I switch from Vodafone to another network (probably Giff Gaff), will I need to root the phone to ensure that I get firmware updates?

Many thanks in advance for any replies.

I'm pretty sure any device from a network provider will come with some branding, Vodaphone included, especially on new and popular phones; as evidence, there's a Vodafone ROM for the Desire S (Version 1.32.161.1). In which case, the Vodafone ROM will only update with the Vodafone SIM inside.

Updates to Android are usually carried by all network providers and as long as your network recognises your phone as an HTC Desire S/Android phone and not just any phone, then you should have no problem when it comes to OTA (Over The Air) Android updates. You should also be able to do this via wifi per giffgaff APN settings.

For HTC software updates, you just check the HTC website and transfer any relevant files.
