Root First time rooted, some important (to me) questions

Lurker
So I just rooted my i897 with 2.3.5 mostly to remove bloat and put in the lagfix (which after reading more isnt the best idea). Trying to get the most from a daily use phone. The guide in this section made it so easy. Wish every instruction I read was that concise.

Since I wont make it run a bit faster that way Ive been giving consideration to geting into CM. Here is where my questions start cus Im a noob to all this.:D

1. Im pretty sure CM 7 was based off GB and its stable, are the next progressions just as stable on the captivate? And if so, what generations are based on what OS? (ICS,JB, KitKat)

2. If Im going for speed and stability, will going with, say CM10, show diminishing returns rather than an older version? Being an older phone, will my technology keep up with the latest & greatest OS?

3. If it turns out I want to go back to 2.3.5 do I really have to start at Eclair and update all the way back up? (sounds like a pain)

Im leaning towards CM because I know it has a huge base but recomendations are always considered. If you want me to find out for myself, thats ok. Just point me in the right direction. Like I said Im new in this world and all the info has my head spinning!

Thanks for any help. It looks like the ppl on here really work hard to be friendly and use the most of what they have to help each other out.

Welcome to Android Forums, bigmorg15! :)

All very good questions.

Let's start with root. In the root process did you install custom recovery like CWM or TWRP? If so, perform a complete backup (nandroid) and then copy the files off the phone for safekeeping. This is a complete system image that will bring the phone back to this exact state. It's your way out of a jam should something go wrong. If you want help with that, we'll be more than happy to go step-by-step.

CM7 is old news for me. I've got the latest stable release of CM10 and it works great. It is an old phone, but the lag is minimal and certainly no worse than any other Android version. Don't forget to get gapps, too.

I've tried other ROM's but for this phone, CM10 is the one I've kept.

Mind you, the Captivate is not my daily driver, so I don't tax it heavily. I've never seen it not handle the apps I've thrown at it.

I rooted using the first guide geeve put up. it wasn't until after i saw the guide with CWM. from what i see though it appears i can flash over the kk4 with the Corn Kernel with no ill effect, just adds the custom recovery. is this correct?

also my girlfriend is borrowing her brothers atrix 4g and it has cm10 so i may tool around with the UI to see how i like it.

thanks for the helpfulness!

Yes. Correct.

Your options are pretty unlimited. You're probably used to TouchWiz, so the CM10 stock launcher is going to seem a little plain. You should look into Nova and Apex, or GO Launcher. Go Launcher is heavily loaded and may bog down a Captivate. I've got Nova on mine.

Shows what I know. I had to figure out what a launcher even was!

So as I understand it, i could install the rom of my choosing (most likely CM10) then essentially 'overlay' a launcher that gives it more 'feel'. I was of the understanding that the OS and interface were of the same program and i was stuck if i don't like it. This opens up a lot of possibility.

Starting to get amped up about this open source awesomeness! lol
