First Time Rooter, Already Borked

So, I've been following these instructions to a T.
Everything was fine until step #7. I couldn't find a superpermissions icon, on the applications page of the phone.
On the cmd line, instead of a # sign, I get a $ sign.
I thought I brazen it out, typed in "su", cmd responded with, "permission denied".

What should I do, folks?

Did you happen to read the big red bold part at the beginning of the post? Sounds like you have a .6 at the end of your build number, and not the necessary .5.

I did, in fact, read the bold red writing at the beginning and at step 7 of the instructions. My build is 2.39.591.1, no '6's. I'll try the one click method, thanks.

The root method you linked is ONLY for build 2.27.651.5. So, 2.39.591.1 would not work with this method.

To confirm, you have the SPRINT CDMA Hero or do you have one for another carrier?

Okay. I used the one-step root trick from jwpilly. Can I/should I regroup with the version of rooting I initially tried?

Went ahead and used the manual guide from the long-form guide. Did a nandroid recovery. Patched the exploit, though I'm not sure if that's necessary. Now, I am ready to install some custom rom, yes? Cyanogen, perhaps?

So, I think I rooted my phone, and I hope correctly.
What should my next step be, pray tell?
I see some folks have a rom manager. Recommendations? I also see praise for the Fresh stuff. What is the most stable version?
I'm looking to wireless tether and extend my battery life. Besides those two desires, I'm pretty well satisfied with the CDMA Hero, as is, though I still haven't really gotten used to the key-entry methodology, know what I mean?

There is just SO MUCH out here, I'm a bit lost.

Thanks to those replying. I appreciate it!
Yours, in trepidation, permazorch.

I mean ANY of the Sprint based ROMs, I was under the impression they wouldn't work

I've used fresh, darch and am currently using ZenEXP with no problems on a CREDO CDMA Hero. haven't had issues with any. for the latest version of ZenEXP though I did have to change my kernel.

Permazorch: I'd suggest you first off download appbrain so you have an offline record of the apps you like then just play with the various ROMs to find what you like.

In case you aren't aware deodex = more visual customization options, and odex = slightly faster speed. Just so you can decide what rom is best for you.

Okay. I thought I was rooted. Still don't REALLY know. I was going to try a reboot recovery through the command line so I could wipe and install fresh. I can't make any progress through the command line. I get, "not recognized as an internal or external command".

What now?

I am lost.
I don't know what to do. I've been trying to follow instructions, but I've hit a wall and I am scared.

Will some person please, please, please walk me through this?

So, I was completely stuck because I couldn't make myself try and change anything EXCEPT by using the command line (In the Beginning was The Command Line). That was a MISTAKE.

I had to get it through my thick head that I could reboot into recovery by powering off and holding the home button down while repowering back on.
I made a nandroid backup. I wiped the data. I could NOT wipe the dalvik. When I tried, phone rebutted with, ERROR: RUN 'WIPE DALVIK' VIA ADB!
I flashed the rom (fresh 2.4) and all seems well.

@roudykreationz: I've just gone through this minor ordeal, and I'd be happy to try and help you. What exact phone are you using, and where are you in the process of rooting?

Just charged phone to 100%, booted into recovery and wiped battery stats. Now rebooting, and I'll let the phone run out of juice and completely die at 0%. Next, I'll charge it back to 100% (and keep the phone on the charger the whole time, while charging).

I am having trouble rooting as well. It is driving me crazy and I want to give up but I really need to root it and remove some of the apps cell south put on the phone. My phone hasn't been acting right and was told I need a minimum amount of memory on the phone for it to work properly. I have deleted all of the apps I could and still don't have enough memory. Every time I think I am ready to root, the htc sync won't connect to my phone and I am back to square one. HELP !!!!!!!!!!
