Root First time trying to root..

yeah, i'd say DL right from the phone, makes it easy. make sure you've got non-market-apps enabled.

Cyanogen is not firmware, it's a ROM. it's also not at the "stable release" stage for this phone yet. it's on Nightly builds, which means they MAY have bugs in them. i'm not saying don't use it, i'm just saying be aware of what you're using =)

Look Here For All Available Roms - Droid Razr ROM's for the Ice Cream Sandwich Kernel [XT912] - DroidRzr.com

that's a good page for ROMs for the razr. make sure you read the installation instructions thoroughly. it's a lot like rooting, you may end up with problems. but as long as you're safestrapped and have a backup, it's difficult to get to a non-recoverable point. except battery life. i lost a phone to battery life once. that was SUPER fun.

then, about a month later, i found out that there exists a thing called a Factory Cable, which allows you to use the phone even without a battery, and i cursed myself for a lack of research. could have saved myself a lot of money.

edit add: despite the page name, it also has JB ROMs.

Hey Ssith, That's good information to have. I am safestrapped and have a back up and feel more comfortable with that. I do eventually want to try to flash a different ROM so I'll be doing much more reading.

As always, I really appreciate your time. I'm sure I'll have questions along the way so thanks in advance to you and others willing to help. It makes it so much more enjoyable when things work out correctly based on good information from generous people like yourself. :)

I have avoided CM because it does not have all of the features that I like. I went to Droidrzr.com and installed Aviator Rom. I tried one or two others but came right back to Aviator.

The operative word for me has been "stable".

Stable sounds good to me. I've been reading a lot before I try to install my first Rom. I've looked at at the Aviator Rom and the Black Widow Rom. Really though, I'm wondering if there is such a thing as a recommended first Rom to flash. Something stable and also fairly straight forward to install for a beginner. Are some more involved than others to flash? So, if anyone has suggestions I'm very interested. As it is all still pretty new to me, I can certainly use good advice.

Also, I see some include gapps and others not; if not what's the best way to get them?

Ok, Update....I'm running CM10.1 and liking it very much..Thanks again to all that helped. I have one remaining question now for anyone that happens to catch this thread. Should I be able to install Titanium Backup in stock JB, back up user apps...then create a new rom slot in SS, flash a rom(for example CM10.1) and then install Titanium in the new rom to restore user apps backed up in stock JB? Tried it and it did not work for me.

Figured this one out...
