First time use and battery charging

rcs1

Lurker
Just picked up a new GS3 and looking for the definite answer on something. I did not charge the phone before using it. I unpackaged it, used it for roughly 4 hours and then charged it (while powered off), until it was 100%.

Has anyone here NOT charged their phone completely before first use, and still been OK? I love the phone but hope I didn't cause any premature battery issues by not charging it. I read the manual after the fact and it says it should be charged before first use, but I thought that was for the old style batteries

As far as I know new batteries don't have the memory part to it so not charging it to start with wouldn't make a difference.

I never charged my HTC One X fully before using (I just can't wait that long before using a new gadget) and it works perfectly fine still.

There's loads of information on the net about this but lots of it just contradicts the other so I just charge mine when I need to and use it when I need to.

Give the battery a couple of weeks to bed in though.

When i first got my GNex it came at about 80% battery and i ended up using it all day without charging, then completing the charging cycle that night when the battery was low :)

I have no problems now. The battery will drain faster though, in the first week or so of use.

I always use new devices right out of the box without any problems, mainly because I'm too excited to wait it out.

There are a TON of myths about what your battery does and what it doesn't. The source I have found to be most beneficial is Jerry from AndroidCentral.com, who is a former electrical engineer. Gist of what he's said in articles:
-Batteries have a shelf life based on cycles. If you charge a battery from 50%-100%, that is half a cycle. If you charge from 0% to 100%, that is 1 cycle.
-Not charging it out of the box has no effect. You are just encouraged to do that so the phone knows where 100% is.
-People also talk about improving battery life by calibration. Battery life technically isn't improved. However, by fully draining the battery and charging it while powered down, the software knows where 0 and 100 are. That gives you a more accurate display of your battery percentage.

So the phone has not been charged since roughly 11:50pm last night

I have 18 hrs on this charge and there is still 35% battery life. Note the phone was not touched for 6 or so hours while I was sleeping. Is this decent battery life? I'm imagining it could make it another 4 hours or so. Use has mostly been light web surfing, listened to music for 30 minutes, spoke on the phone. I was looking at it all day

thanks for all of the replies fellas
