Flashing Green & Red Light

Been on phone most of day playing games, so battery took a bit of a hammering, put into a charge and continued. The notification light started flashing green and red.

Is this due to over heating of the battery, and have I now done permanent damage to the battery?

the blinking amber/red and green light indeed indicates that your phone is overheating. I used to have this issue while using GPS navigation while charging and simultaneously bathing the phone in sun heat through the windshield. The best solution to cool the phone down quick is to remove any case you may be using, unplug the phone, and let it idle till it cools down (shouldn't take too long).

As for permanent damage, i doubt it. I've done it multiple times and my phone still says the battery is in good condition.

You can use one of many third party apps to monitor temp, https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.macropinch.pearl&feature=search_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5tYWNyb3BpbmNoLnBlYXJsIl0. being an example which also estimates time remaining on your battery charge. I believe the phone considers itself to be overheating when the battery temp rises above 50C, with 40-50C being the warmer zone (yellow in the temp part of the app I just pointed out)

yea I unplugged it straight away and turned it off and put it next to the window to cool down. My stupid fault for caning it all day. Had to have something to keep me occupied whilst watching Sunderland today, ironically we won!

Tried to charge since and I get the steady red light so all should be well. Will wait to charge fully when going to bed this evening.

it happens, don't worry about it too much. I figure it's just like a computer, if it gets too hot it'll shut itself off

The Li-Ion battery's temperature operating range is:
for discharging -20C (-4F) to +60C (+140F).
for charging 0C (+32F) to +45C (+113F).

The battery won't be charged if its temperature is below 0C (+32F) or above +45C (+113F) because the phone's charge controlling will project the battery.
Therefore it'll shut down charging until the battery's temperature will meet again the charge operating range.

So, no worry, the red/green flashing just indicates that the battery's controller has shut down charging :)
