Root flashing.. need community wisdom

Hi all, was hoping to get a little help here from people more experienced.

I am currently a Ting customer (Ting is a CDMA Sprint MVNO) and love it. I have two phones, an old Optimus S and an LG Marquee. My girlfriend recently retired her DINC 2 and switched to Ting (broken charge port, which I later replaced).

Ting welcomes flashed phones on their network (but obviously cant help with the flashing). Whle the Marquee and Dinc2 have similar specs, the Dinc2 runs much better. I have been contemplating flashing it to Ting for a while now, using the Optimus S as a donor phone. However, I just broke the screen on my Marquee, so that is a possible donor as well (I did not want to risk bricking my daily driver, but I can always activate the opti).

I have rooted many phones, and played with alternate ROMS. I run a PC repair business and am very tech savvy, however I have never flashed a phone before, and was wondering about the following questions if anybody here can help.

  1. Should the Dinc2 be rooted first?
  2. I know I need the ESN/MEID, HA, and AAA from the donor phone, is there anything else?
  3. Verizon and Sprint apply PRL updates differently. I assume this means I will have to find a correct PRL online or get it from the donor phone, correct?
  4. Should the donor phone be active on Ting before the flash, or should I activate that MEID after the flash?
  5. Any other tips, links, rants or abuse you can think of!

Thanks for any assist! I have seen info on flashing to Boost, which is Sprint of course, so I know it is feasible, but the info seems sparse and lacking, so I was hoping for input before making the plunge.

i dont know much about flashing phones, either, but ill share what i have :)

1) it prolly does not matter much is you root the inc 2 first,or after. the inc 2 does not get a "true" s off via turning off the devices actual radio secure flag. it gets a patched hboot, wich basically just ignores the desperate cries of the radio to do security checks  as such, you have access to all partitions, but some write protections still exist upon boot. basically, the things youll be modding will "stick" just as well rooted or not.

having said the above,id downgrade and s-off prior to the actual flashing,if for no other reason than its overwith and you know it wont affect something youve done afterward.

2)not sure

3)from what little i know, youll need a prl from the donor phone(or one listed online)

4)the donor phone should be active,in case you need to jump thru any hoops with the activation. that way things work as they instruct you

dont know if that helps you much or not. good luck :)

Thanks for the input. I have read and read, and it seems some people do have a problem with certain settings 'sticking'. It seems people have flashed this to Boost and Cricket, so Ting should not be much different. So, tonight I will be downgrading, s-offing and rooting the dinc 2 and I will go from there!
