Root Flashing ROM with same build

I just got to thinking, flashing on Samsung was easy, just pick the ROM you want, put on SD and install and wipe etc. However with Sony we have got the extra bit of flashing the .ftf too. Out of curiosity, if I am say on the current build .757, then I wanted to try another .757 ROM, would I just have to wipe and install the zip and not have to do anything with the flashtool? It's not something I am looking at doing at the moment, just curious really.

You put on SD card . do a wipe data cache and dalvic cache and flash the rom and reboot .

Whilst this is true for a lot of devices, Sony handsets with locked bootloaders work differently.

I'm looking to try iHackers and I was wondering the same. From what I gather, a full wipe is required (system, data, cache & dalvik) and as long as you're staying on the same build (.757 in this case), there's no requirement to flash any ftf file in flashtool, unless the dev recommends it.

Also, you'd need to reflash the dual recovery file zip file before you rebooted (unless the dev included a recovery in his ROM).

Also the dev sometimes have different kernels to flash . some are speed and some are factory . so where you see a ROM DL just view all for the Sony they can be very funny but a in brick able device .

Thanks guys, that's something else I was wondering actually, is the ftf actually the kernel..or is it part of the software that also holds the kernel?

When you use Flashtool, you're flashing a boot image (kernel) to the boot partition. You flash other stuff too, but the kernel is one of the main elements.

This is because with a locked bootloader, you can't write to the boot partition in recovery. Even if you could, the device wouldn't boot because a locked bootloader prevents you from using anything other than official Sony kernels.

Make sense?
