Don't mean to hijack this and the OP already got his answer and this seems to be a good place to ask.
If you swipe out a work that's not in the dictionary, flext9 makes an error noise. Under 2.2 on my DroidX, the noise was just for a second. Under 2.3, it's making a noise that lasts for 20 seconds or so. Is there any way to disable that?

The problem I'm having is with Pp Uu Vv etc letters that are the same as caps as in lower case

To make a small "p", draw it in the bottom half of the input area. to make a capital "P" use the whole rectangle. This works very well for me.
It also gives you the choice in the word selection window to either capitalize or not. So, if you draw a "p" , you can choose between "p" and "P" in the word selection area.
