Help Flipout on Tmobile?

I have two questions.

I have a BlackBerry 8520 and I wanted to switch to an Android phone. I don't have a data plan, so I can't download BlackBerry AppWorld w/o BIS. I was thinking about switching to the Flipout.

I don't want to pay for data. So can I download Apps from the Market w/o a data plan, just using wifi?

And, can I use this phone unlocked on Tmobile?

You can just use Wifi if you like. Generally speaking if you don't have the APN settings for your carrier entered then you can't use any mobile data.

T-Mobile: UK or US? My other half has a flipout that she uses on T-M UK.

I bought the flip out for my husband. He has an att go phone account. He likes something small that fits in his pocket. He rarely uses his phone for calls, texts some, and takes some pictures. I have an htc aria, and thought he would like the android os and would enjoy using the wifi capabilities while at home & occasionally some data usage when out of town. I have been disappointed that I have not been able to figure out how to eliminate 'background' data usage. Granted, the charge is only 20 cents here or 27 cents there, but it is frustrating not to know what data the phone is accessing. In retrospect I should have just gotten him an Aria. It would have cost a bit more at the outset, but has a better camera. It is taller, but much skinnier than the flipout. If you don't want to use a data plan, I can't recommend this phone.
 
You could just remove the AT&T APN settings. Then it wouldn't be possible for the phone to pull any mobile data.
 
I am having trouble navigating to the actual settings. I tried wireless & networks, mobile networks, apn's. That gives a choice of ISP.Cingular or wap.Cingular (currently checked.) guess I will try selecting the former. What harm can it do I'll soon know!
 
What you probably need to do is edit the settings for the APN that you have selected so that it is invalid / doesn't work.

There will be a server address in the settings. Put 'xxx' on the end or something so it's not valid any more.
 
when you navigate to the access point names under settings, everything is greyed out. you cannot remove the default settings. you can change the apn to isp or some bogus apn you make up, but the phone will change the settings back to wap.
i have failed to find a way to solve this.
 
All I can say is my wife's unbranded uk flipout allows you to mess with the apn settings to your heart's content. AT&T are by reputation the worst US carrier for locking down various things (unnecessarily) on their Android phones. They may have screwed you over I'm afraid.
