Help FM Radio only works with earphones plugged in.

My S2's radio will only work if I plug in some earphones. This is very odd as there is an option for playing radio through the speaker.

I cannot find any way of using it without earphones plugged in, which is a bit of a problem. I don't normally carry earphones and if I suddenly decide to listen to radio by holding the built-in speaker to my ear, it's impossible.

Am I missing something or this this just a design flaw? Is there another radio app that will overcome this problem?

Thanks.

Not a design flaw... and yes, you are missing something!

"Learn to listen to music and news on the FM radio. To listen
to the FM radio, you must connect a headset, which serves as
the radio antenna.

The earphones act as an antenna, that's all. You don't need to stick them in your ears to listen. All cell phones work that way, as far as I know. But I agree with you that it's silly... they could just have a built-in telescopic antenna in the side of the phone.

Hmm... a 4ft metal antenna on the side of a mobile phone instead of a 4ft wire headset antenna... wonder why no-one's thought of that? :D

If you open the back cover - there is some kind of connector for what looks like an antenna, car kit etc? Has anyone seen this just to the left of the centre of the phone body. Maybe that can be used if anyone knows what the details of that are?
Wishful thinking perhaps?

The round gold thing? That's for an external GSM antenna.

I was not referring to a "4-foot" telescopic antenna, obviously. But there's no reason a 1-foot size couldn't be used. They compact to about 3 inches these days.

also, it only gives me 3 location options. I suppose for New Zealand the closest is south east Asia, but not really.....lets be real. Can I expand those options??

I took an old set of headphones and cut it down to size, it will work with just the hard jack stub piece but you will need to keep your finger on it to get reception, the reception goes bad after you cut the headphones down shorter than about a foot.

i never use the radio much, but i always thought that if i'de start listening to it alot, i'll take an old set of earphones, cut it like an inch from the connecting pin, and use it as an antenna, it should work fine, i think, but i never tried it.

Hi all, I am also having trouble with the FM radio on my new Samsung Galaxy SII. I can not tune into any radio stations at all - I get static at each frequency through the headphones. I have followed the instructions in the manual, I have tried two different sets of headphones but the scan gives nothing. Any ideas?

here's a pic of it :

what do you mean?
maybe im just missing something, but i think that it doesn't matter which side you'll connect, it should be good.

I've only had one phone (Sony Ericsson Aino) that allowed you to use the radio without plugging headphones in, but you had to use the included Bluetooth headset adapter (MH-100) and headphones with it. It was a trick as the phone just acted as a front-end to a FM receiver in the Bluetooth headset. I still want an Android app for this Bluetooth headset. But if you wanted to play the radio from the speaker you then needed to connect a headset to the phone. So that phone came with 2 radio receivers, one in the phone and the other in the headset. But the one in the headset can not be used without the SE Aino phone.

All of my others required headphones connected: Nokia 6200, Nokia 6230, SE w810i, SE w580i and now Samsung GS2.
