So, last night my mom warned me before to bed to not get any overages.

I jokingly said "burned halfway through my limit already!"

Which I have.. on wifi which doesn't count.

Wake up this morning and receive a text saying I am 50$ over in data charges!

I am on the 200 mb plan.. Net counter says I've used a whopping 1.29 MB over the cellular network.

Since I installed 4g watchdog I've used a whopping 400 kilobytes!

My stepdad without understanding anything wants me to bring back the phone and that be the end of it..

However, At&t never sent me any text (even if I DID somehow manage to blow through that much) saying "your at 65% you are 80% and then 90% and 100%).


And FWIW to go over 50$ in overages when they add another 200 mb each time would require me to use roughly 800MB..

I doubt I could do that one in my sleep.

So.. I am just wondering how the account got screwed up now..

And figured I would just sorta warn people.. Most of you probably already know to do so.. but, check your account frequently and watch out.

Never know who might acciently do what.. (I say accidently because, I don't think it was intentional but, you never know).

Tell them you want a log of every kB you used.
 
Instead of calling them like I would have done.. (seeing as I sold att phones I dealt with customer service alot.. and know how to handle it..)

They went back into the lady who sold it to us and she told us something that makes no sense to me.

She just said there will be overages on the bill and bring it to her and she will have it taken care of.

And yes.. For those asking I got the phone yesterday around lunchtime.

I already had that in mind if they were really going to try to push it.

If the situation gets bad enough, I'm going to take over.

It sucks that the bill is in the hands of someone who completely doesn't understand cellphones. Much less the rules, regulations, what cell phones use, what data actually is ect, ect, ect.

Oh well whatever..
 
Dude best advice would be to take the reins of that situation if your mom and step dad have no clue you need to step up

Never mind the fact that I sold at&t phones, dealt with at&t customer service regularly and know more about the situation than they understand...

They still don't want me handling it just cause they are the parents.

I've had my own plan since I was 16. (Sheesh, so long ago =[ )

Yes, my mom signed for it. But xfered on my 18th birthday. I paid the bill.

I actually lived on my own for 3 years with my girlfriend.

When her and I brokeup I wasn't going to try and cover all the bills and rent myself.

My parents agree'd to pay the 9.99$ so long as I am in college...

Unfortunately my schedule is just getting more and more disbursed over the week as I get into school..

4 days a week from about 9 till 5 almost...

There is no practical way I'm going to be able to handle a serious job taking real classes.

I know a lot of people love to brag about handling school and work and blah blah blah.

But, I don't think these people go for real degree's that require 3 or 4 hours of study for every hour your in class. -.- (not accusing anyone here mind you.. but, for some reason a lot of people love to brag about "working 40 hours a week and still doing well in college!" which just isn't practical when 12 credit hours a week comes out to another 36+ hours your suppose to study at home and being at school 4 out of 7 days of the week.

No need to disparage people many people went to college and worked you figure it out. If you can't and you have to stay then you have to deal with their decisions

Technically.. they are the one's who have to deal with their decisions.

The phone is still in my hands.. and after 30 days its to late to take it back. :rolleyes:

Yep.

But, thats nothing new. Lived with it all my life another year or two until I'm out of college isn't that big of a deal to me.

I have school 4 days a week.. thats the way my schedule fell.. thats the way it will probably fall again for a few more semesters..

Plus, there are quite a few project oriented classes which involve groups... so in addition to a metric ****-ton of studying.. I now have to communicate with other people and get projects done x.x

Oh well. Like I was saying.. always remember..

The person who does your upgrade doesn't always know what they are doing.
 
First, you need to log onto your At&t account on-line and check your usage. It is normally about a day behind, but it is what you are being really charged and you can see when your actual usage is. The Apps you download may or maynot be accurate, although 3G watchdog has been pretty close for me.

I am on Wifi 99.9% of the time, but when I first got my X10, I was getting usage charges too. It didn't bug me because I was still on my Unlimited BB plan, but I needed to get it fixed before I converted over to a 200MB plan. I used 7M my first month, which was almost all during setup.

I found that even though my device was on Wifi, when the screen turned off it would shut off the Wifi and revert to 3G. I finally found a setting to NOT turn-off wifi and that fixed my issues.

With my streak there is a drop-down that has toggles for 3G and Wifi, I never even turn on the 3G unless I know I am going to be out of Wifi.

Good luck with fixing it, when I called At&t about charges a few days ago, they credited the activation fee and the "Where" fees without even arguing it.

Did you know there is a product called "Where" that came on my X10 and is a subscription service for $2.99 a month? I didn't but if you don't look at your bill closely, it can get missed.
 
uh, cant you just pay the extra $10 to switch to the 2gb plan for the month and pay $25 instead of whatever overage

I know iphone 4 is different.. but, between me and my parents.. thats 9$ extra a month if the have it too.. I will make sure they check it with a fine tooth comb to make sure its not on there.

I am lucky to have 200 MB..

and to be honest I am bathed in wifi anyway..

Sorry, I no longer have the X10. It was under the Wifi setting somewhere, I believe the I set it to "always on" or "never sleep".

How I noticed was when I picked the phone up once, I was looking at the screen and when it first came on, I saw the 3g icon then it quickly flipped to Wifi. That is what made me go look at data use online. I noticed that most of the usage was between midnite and 8am when the device is not being used.

Now with my Streak, I just only turn on 3G when I know I am out of my Wifi. There was another setting that said to "only download updates on Wifi", but I can't seem to find that one again either :confused:
 
I don't know if this is the case, but it happened to me. Did you get the phone near the end of your billing cycle? If you prorated it, this may be the case. I got the 200MB plan and prorated it halfway through my billing cycle and two days after I got it, my data went from 1.2MB to 104MB. What they did was make it look like I only had half my data available and I only paid half for my first month.

If you were near the end of your cycle and prorated it, maybe they only allotted you a few MBs of data. Though, the ATT My Wireless app did show me that I had used 100MB of data when I hadn't, so if that didn't happen to you, then maybe this isn't the case.

If you are rooted you may want to pick up Droidwall. It will let you block certain or all apps on 3g while letting them work on wifi.

I am surprised I made it 24 hours without rooting..

I wanted to see how long I could hold off.. I didn't even really root for any other reason than screenshots and the strange satisfaction I get from voided warranties.

So I'll check it out. thanks
