For those of you (especially former BB users) who complain about email...

This is a very detailed tutorial - good! Do you know if this works for IMAP accounts?

Also, anyone know of a way to increase font size in gmail on the Eris?
 
I've been running my ISP provided POP email though google for some time now. Rather than instruct google to get the POP mail, I went direct to the ISP web interface and configured it to forward mail to my google account. Then I set up google like you did to reply with my POP address. I forget which one does it, but one service strips (or omits) the POP forwarding so the mail arrives directly to google just like if it had been sent to that address directly. The advantage to doing things this way (if your ISP allows) is that there is no 15 minute wait for google to poll your ISP. When mail hits your ISP, it is automatically forwarded to google, which pushes it directly to your phone.

The one downsided to this (and it applies to the tutorial method as well as far as I can tell) is that the replies aren't as seamless as you might like. You get a message in the header something about being sent by google on behalf of your POP mail address. If people look at the mail headers, your google account is revealed.
 
Since reading this thread and posting my first reply, I've went back and looked at my settings. I had things set to return via google and that's why my google account showed up on sent messages. I changed things to be sent from my ISP SMTP server instead and now my google account is virtually invisible. The mail header does show mail.gmail.com but not the account name.

Good tutorial. It got me thinking about my setup and now I've made a nice improvement.

I don't mind waiting 15 minutes for an email. It's only my AOL mail that I use for emails that I don't want coming to or going from my gmail. Maybe if I figure it out, I'll try it your way, but it's not really that necessary as I've had the mail app polling for it every 4 hours.

The way I have it configured may not be for everyone. It relies on your POP account being able to forward to google automatically. Mine does, but others may not.
 
I do this and have it pop pull from AOL and MSN/Live/Hotmail accounts and even other Gmail accounts.

Only old MSN accounts let you forward anywhere, and of course gmail, it's a shame AOL doesn't, so waiting for gmail to retrieve the aol pop emails can be up to an hour, which is okay I guess, if I want instant emails I give people my real gmail email now...
 
I am having a big problem with this. I went through the tutorial and everything went fine. I add that i set up 2 hotmail accounts with this. It never stops pulling my emails from the inboxes of my 2 hotmail accounts. Thousands and thousands of emails. Read or unread ones it doesn't matter b/c it is pulling both, but it would not push new emails to the inboxes of either, meaning I would not receive any "test" emails like the end of the tutorial showed. So i wasted about an hour of my time and went through both of my hotmail accounts and deleted all 800 pages of emails, emptied the trash and all that. That still did not stop my phones gmail from getting filled up with the thousands and thousands of emails i deleted. So i tried to stop it a different way. I went into my gmail settings on my actual computer and deleted everything the tutorial had me do...i turned pop forwarding off and deleted the pop accounts from my gmail. I thought this would work and it didn't. I am still somehow getting the same batches of emails into my gmail inbox and it is so annoying....Any Suggestion???? Please.
 
this works great for what I need. thanks! I don't mind mixing my gmail and in fact prefer, which I created just for when I received the Eris, with my regular email (road runner). I have always been frustrated by the fact that I couldn't send or forward emails from my Eris from my road runner acct. Now I can. I followed the tutorial and it was an easy set up...works perfectly. thanks cmack for the link.

I have no issues sending or forwarding emails with K-9 and my Roadrunner account.
 
I was just going to ask if anyone uses an alternative email reading application, like K9. The default mail app can be so slow to open sometimes.

Touchdown is expensive, but I have multiple Activesync accounts. The default email app only allows one. TD is unlimited, not sure about K9. But with an AS account I can manage the device in Exchange 2007. If a user loses a device I can wipe it remotely.

I am trying K-9 again. I have a couple of questions about how well it interacts with your phone. When I look at the "partial wake usage" in Spare Parts, K-9 sits on top above android system. Second, I notice that I get push errors, although the email is pushed instantly. It seems during the interim this happens. Are these similar issues you are having?
