Former BlackBerry user looking for something to "replace" BlackBerry Messenger ...

I recently came over from using a Blackberry (and using the Blackberry Messenger app), and I am wondering what you all might suggest as an easy way to briefly send quick messages (not using SMS or email) that would be easy to set up on my end and for my Blackberry friends.

Currently I do not have any chat systems or instant messaging systems set up (as never used any of that before), so I am hoping you can make your suggestions very simple to understand and set up. I'm somewhat new to all this technology, but I am anxious to learn.

Well you already have Gtalk installed on the phone and it is available for BlackBerry as well.
 
Well, the thing is, do you want all these different messengers? You want MSN, AIM, Yahoo!, etc.? If you do, simply go their sites, make an account with each of them. Remember the names and passwords and then download a client like Meebo (which is what I use). Sign in to all the accounts once with Meebo and it will remember them. Now, as long as you have internet access, you are signed in to the accounts you made.

I don't think Android has something like BB messenger, where you have a pin and all, although Gtalk may count. You can access gtalk on your gmail account, though, and you don't need an Android phone (the way you need a BB phone) to sign in to Gtalk.
 
BBMessenger is the one thing I truly miss having. There really is no comparable messenger app out there fpr the droid.
 
Use Gtalk and have your BlackBerry friends install it on their BlackBerry's. I've done that and it works very well. They complained a little at first, but who doesn't complain when something changes.
 
i have found that my friends on blackberry's can not participate in a group chat via gtalk on a berry. only down side so far.
 
google talk i used bb messenger for the "free" txting to my wife who also USED to have a BB
 
I do use GTalk and it is OK. There were just some features on BBM that I miss that GTalk will probably never have. I liked being able to see when my message was truly delivered and when and if the other party opened it.

It's not so much the change people wouldn't like, it's more of the change to a little less feature rich app.

Don't get me wrong, I really am starting to enjoy my droid and getting used to it as well, but I didn't hate my BB either.
