Legal action might be taken against people who provide tools for others to unlock their phones, but even that is up to how much companies like AT&T and Verizon want to pursue them
That one actually bothers me less than the HTC actions. If you read that article thoroughly they explain that there are still legal ways to purchase an unlocked phone, get the carrier to unlock it, or unlock it yourself if they don't.Then this yesterday also makes things shaky:
Carrier-Unlocking Smartphones Will Be Illegal In The U.S. Tomorrow: Here's How (And If) It Affects You

The RUU's will still to be available to HTC and authorized repair centers to refresh the phones, but if users can't do that themselves many are going to use some method to permanently brick their phone rather than try to have it serviced while rooted and S-OFF with a custom ROM installed. That will result in even more warranty and insurance claims for HTC phones. If the RUU is gone, doesn't that mean that pretty much if you super brick your phone, its over with?

Bad move HTC, you've lost a customer.
It already has ramjet, my EVO 3D will be my last HTC due to their locked bootloaders, the fact that they make us have to work far too hard for s-off and their treatment of the development community. Anybody want to buy a s-off HBoot 1.5 revolutionary 3D?That one actually bothers me less than the HTC actions. OTOH, HTC blocking the distribution of RUU's and custom Sense based ROM's could really hurt them in the long run. Even if it's a relatively small percentage of users that modify their phones from stock, many issues in the stock ROM's have been identified and resolved by independent developers and they will just force users to AOSP based ROM's that provide no competitive advantage for HTC and encourage migration to other brands.

Me too. That was the last straw. Samsung here I come.

not hardly....
Ditto to above. That might cover shipping.
soon as I can save up enough, GS 3 for me ^_^Yep looks like no more HTC for me. RUU's are needed.Bad move HTC, you've lost a customer.
Another article about that topic was linked in post #2 of this thread, but I don't understand the connection to HTC since the unlocking that article discusses is a carrier issue. You guys wonder why HTC is getting crazy
Unlocking Your Phone Is Now Illegal, But What Does That Mean For You? | TechCrunch

its good to see all the pros give opinions. i personally don't have much time to dig too much into phone, just don't like the idea of one phone for all (apple). the sense of community is really wonderful, everyday i check in to see whats new on the forum, this is a great experience.
i always just thought RUU is merely a way to return to stock, without it i guess its just more risky ? do we really need RUU to return to stock ? since we can flash all the components in hboot anyway. i thought the process of change ur carrier A phone to carrier B is called Flashing... and has always been illegal ...
Is Sense the reason why htc is able to do all these ?
