Foxfi working, I think. (Verizon)

When I open Foxfi it also opens the stock Verizon's Mobile Hotspot Icon, and I can connect my tablet. Is Verizon seeing or charging for this? If I turn the Verizon Mobile Hotspot off (leaving Foxfi open) the wifi connection ends.

When I open the Verizon Mobile Hotspot by itself and try to turn it on it tells me I need to call to subscribe, which tends me to believe that when Foxfi is open and Verizon's Mobile Hotspot open it is indeed acting as a free connection since I didn't call VZ to set it up. Did this description make sense?

1st image shows whan I open Foxfi and Mobile Hotspot also appears.
2nd image shows what the Mobile Hotspot notification looks like opened
3rd image shows what comes up if I open the Mobile Hostspot app independently.

This seems to be the million dollar question right now. I am waiting to hear how this goes before I update. Maybe someone could call and ask if they are being charged? Or if you want to wait and report what your next bill says, that would be good too. If there's no charge, it sounds like we are good to go!

FoxFi Devices

FoxFi isn't supported on JellyBean and it will open your carrier hotspot app. I can't say about Verizon, but I would be surprised if you weren't charged.

That's what I would think, except for that last screen shot I posted. That is, I never called to subscribe yet it still worked.

With Foxfi now linked to the Hotspot app, probably very easy now for VZW to check when that feature is polled, since must be talking to their network if the account is authorized or not.

My guess is using the app now will not result in a charge, but at some point VZW will push back. Not sure what they will do other than an email or text threat that they will zap unlimited plans from users that appear to be using the function without paying.

VZW could care less for limited data users, since either way through usage they get more money- Hotspot or not. People that are using the heck out of tethering with non Hotspot could probably be the first picked off as examples.

Just guessing, but never underestimate them. There could be a corporate cash incentive for getting rid of as many unlimited plans as possible.

Called Verizon customer support. The customer service rep actually told me to download FoxFi because I have the unlimited data plan. Told him that with the new system update the Mobile Hotspot app cranked up when I started FoxFi and I was concerned that there would be charges associated with its activation.

He said that I do not have the Mobile Hotspot as a feature of my account and regardless of whether it started or not, there would be no charges for the use of FoxFi or the Mobile Hotspot. So the info in the post below, at least for now, seems accurate.

I'm going to use FoxFi, so I guess we'll see.

Thanks for summarizing my question. As seen in my 3rd screen shot it seems to be telling me to contact VZ to subscribe to Mobile Hotspot, implying that I do not have it through VZ,meaning any wif I now get with Foxfi is not going through VZ's Hotspot. - Yes, I have unlimited data

Guys thanks for all the information in this post, it has been extremely helpful and most everyone seems to be in the same situation i am with unlimited data. However I do have one more question.

If I were to go the root rout and get JB that way, is there an alternative way I could make my phone a wifi hot spot without using Foxfi?

This works on the latest JB update: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1988735

Currently working on my Verizon S3

One point of interest, this work-around and tether app must be the sould user of the wifi components - if you try to turn on regular wifi, or turn on a wifi surveying app it the tether will close with a humorous "What the hell, you phone just took back over WiFi" message, and when reactivated will continue to be terminated until all wifi is turned off and the phone is rebooted.

Still a great tether app, I'm getting 16M u/d with it and the battery drain is not nearly as atrocious as with ICS
