free service?

So i'm confused i bought my venture to use as a wifi phone since i rooted it i can access the mobile data without it being activated...how is this possible? lol

idk. i'm not complaining about it. its been since changed to the hades rom its been doing it. i was thinking it was the rom so i went back to stock and its still doin it. i worked with urs too. hopefully they don't fix it lol.

I know what you mean. For some reason when I don't have service I can access FB (but no other sites) & only using Opera Mobile

well i've never activated the phone. i just bought it to use as a wifi phone then i tried to use it to make a call with pinger and it worked lol.

Well I don't know how the calling works,
but yeah I get that as well, I never complained once :3

I guess sometimes you can apply you get what you paid for xD

well as of I know i think only with this phone and i tried using my htc wildfire s marvelc it just wouldn't connect

This sounds familiar. In my job as a network administrator, our organization allows people to self-register for access to our on-campus wifi. In order to do that they need access to our registration system, but occasionally they may need access to some other sites before they can even register. They connect to the wifi and their access to most of the internet is blocked, with exceptions for those other sites, until they complete the process.

Perhaps Virgin had a promotion that involved self-activating through FB.

we have definitely come a long way with this phone, considering it is so low spec. with all the custom firmware we have, it is definitely worth the money! i got these phones on sale for 29.99. i bought 3 of em. haha! one for my girl friend, one for my "everyday use", and one for development testing. i hope we get some more knowledgable devs interested in this phone. i highly doubt we will, just because of the low specs, but i guess that means ill just have to study twice as hard on development to get this phone where it needs to be! ;-)

A friend of mine has an inactivated Motorola Triumph that can still access 3G data.. and it's rooted. So this occurance has been noted on another Virgin Mobile phone. Not sure why.

how old are all of these reports of this happenning? if they r fairly new, i have a theory... all the server-side upgrades VM have been rolling out lately. they have changed the whole structure of their network recently. now, when ur plan month runs out, your internet doesnt disconnect altogether... it just redirects to the VM website to top up. maybe users being able to access internet without redirecting is a bug in their systems that they have overlooked. so, are all sites accessable, or do some websites redirect to the VM site? i imagine such a defect would be difficult (and expensive!) to patch and roll out a SECOND update while still in the middle of rolling out their FIRST update. nevertheless, it is a very interesting issue! by the way... does anyone know what the MDN and MSID is originally set to when u first get the phone brand new, out of the box? i cant remember. i believe it was all 0's, 1's, or 9's, but i cant remember if that is right. i would like to set my spare development testing phone's MDN and MSID back to stock to see what happens. right now, i am not able to use internet on it with it deactivated, but changing those would b an interesting experiment.

Wow.

Sounds like VM has some sort of hole in their system.

Not sure, but it's probably a good idea to look before you leap here.;)

Ultimately, carriers can track anything.

Is this whole thread about a way to get access on a carrier network without paying anything?

well, i dont know about anyone else, but it definitely interests me in WHY the free service was accomplished. ya, its a touchy subject, as the outcome of it is illegal, but it is still interesting info. if someone could find WHY exactly this is happening, they could probably sell the info to VM so they could patch it on their network ;-)

I would have thought by now, someone at VM knows about this wouldn't you think?

u would think... but my theory is that they may be too busy with the huge system network updates they have been rolling out across the country to even notice, especially if this issue happens to be limited to a few select devices. they have changed the whole structure of their network... wouldnt surprise me if there was a bug or 2. it probably WOULD b better off to close this thread to keep our users out of trouble, but id b a liar if i said i havent been following this thread out of curiousity. ;-)

no hole in their system. right now if you have not paid your account. you can access google play and all google related sites like mail but nothing else. they are calling it limited access according to techinical support. why its being offered at all is beyond me. but with them having this in place it doesnt mean they dont have a few other url domains not blocked out yet like those mentioned above.

thanks for the info curtis! im guessing its their way of doing a "soft disconnect" of your service before doing a "hard disconnect". it probably makes it easier and quicker for them to restore full service to you after topping up when u have let your month run out. that would b my guess at least. i know that personally, whenever i had let my phone be disconnected in the past, after topping up i would have internet/data interruption for hours after i topped up. it seeems instant now since their network update.
