Free tether usage under 2gb, rooted phones

Is there a way to tether that doesnt require going though AT&T? Im not actually going to use it for anything more then a few MB.
 
Im sure this is heavily frowned upon, I work in the Connection Center at a Walmart, and occasionally we need a wifi connection to setup phones (F'in Motoblur!) or to show a customer how to setup a connection on their tablets. So Im would be using a very small amount of data in this way. Plus even on my heaviest months I barely uses a gig of my data plan.
 
If your phone supports the wi-fi hotspot feature, then you can just enable that. You probably won't be able to do it on carrier branded phones, though. If you got your phone unlocked somewhere else, it'll probably work.
