Free voicemail app?

Is there an app that will answer calls after a certain number of rings and then ask the caller to leave a message, which is then stored on the phone? Instead of having the carrier hold the voicemail and having to pay them for it.

I would like voicemail, but i dont want to pay 7$ a month for that. It seems like it should be possible

as long as you have call forwarding available you can use google voice. Free with your gmail account.

Just sign up for voice. You will get a number, but that doesn't matter - just don't give it out.

Then download the app from the Play Store. Once you do, go into your dialer settings and set google voice to be your voicemail.

It will not hold the voicemail on your phone. But you can access it from any web browser or the app on your phone. You can also have it send you an MP3 via email and/or text with transcipt.

All free.
