I've tried three apps so far and they all fall short: Hotspotting, Free Zone WiFi, and WiFiMap.
Hotspotting was the closest to meeting my requirements but, like the others, it was a Catch-22 situation when it came to caching: user is not connected, but looking for a spot to connect to. App cannot show the map of spots because it has no cache and needs a connection....
Musts:
Wants:
Finally, is there maybe some reason that a third-party app cannot dip into GoogleMaps' cache? i.e. Would a caching feature require said app to maintain it's own cache?

Musts:
- Map caching - either by the app itself or by dipping into GoogleMaps' cache. So when we are looking for a connection (but are not connected) we can bring up a map and see what is close. The ability to export a .KML file of spots that could be imported into some mapping app that has it's own cache would be a workable alternative.
. - The ability to distinguish between unsecured and secured spots. Hard-coded limiting to unsecured spots would be a workable alternative.
. - The ability to annotate unsecured spots as being actually "Free" as opposed to the many pay-for-play spots that are unsecured, but require login.
. - The ability for the user to add spots that they have found themselves.
Wants:
- Ability for user to annotate spots.
. - Ability to export a .KML file of spots
. - Ability to update some central database with user-discovered spots
. - Ability to filter out specified SSIDs. e.g. The user may discover that OptimumWiFi, Xfinity.... and so-forth may have not security, but are never, ever going to be free.
