Friend location finding app

Looking for an app that I can use to locate friends and navigate to their location. It sucks when some drunk friend doesn't know where they are and is trying to give me directions by saying "I'm between a starbucks and some woods." I've heard of loopt, but looking for opinions on everything out there.

Any apps or methods I can use if my friend doesn't have a particular app? It would be sweet if they could send me a text message with a special code, which triggers the app on my phone to locate them and direct me towards them.

Well, you should know that android phones come with latitude. Latitude is part of google maps, so if you and your friend both have a android, then you can share locations with each other.

There are also apps that allow sending of location via Email or SMS - that kind of thing.

However, it depends on the capability of your friend's phone. You cannot just locate ANY phone out there - not possible. Your friend's phone needs to have location tracking features and an app that can send or share that location with you.

Is latitude at least available for the iPhone as well?

Yes it is. However, I do not know if it automatically updates in the background like the Android version does. Hopefully someone who knows for sure can chime in.

Pretty sweet little app. I've linked with one friend already. But like I said, ideally, I'd be able to find any friend without them having to do much/anything. If I'm limited to andriod and iPhones, so be it. But having to have a friend download an app..... then add me to their friends list.... make sure gps is turned on...etc is a little much.

I asked this question because I was on vacation in Boston with a bunch of friends last weekend. I get a call from a friend "Whoooooo! Where are you!?! Come to this bar we're at!!!" Ok. Where is it. "I have no clue where we are!!! But it's awesome!! WHOOOOOO!!!!" So if I could just GPS my way to their phone, problems solved.

The privacy implications of anything that would allow you to track another phone's location (without them downloading and app and granting you access to their location) are staggering.

I hope there isn't, and never will be, such a thing available to the average public.

Yeah. Just hoping they could send me a text with a special code or something.

"Hey stop yelling whoooo in my ear and send me a text saying FIND ME 66254."

The text comes through and my app knows to navigate to that phone number. He sent the text, that should get around any privacy implications.

I believe tracking to a phone number would be something that even law enforcement needs a warrent for so I doubt there is an app that would do this for you... (also tracking someone this way would lead to to the cell tower they are connected to not them and there might be a fair distance between the two...)
