Help Front speaker problem.

mspayne

Lurker
Hi everyone,

I just recently got a Legend, and am loving it so far, though today I began to have a problem with the front speaker. During calls there is no sound, though the other person can hear me. However, calls work fine on loudspeaker (using the back speaker) or on headphones, and the ringtone etc can be heard. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? I'm hoping this is a software glitch and not a poor connection.

I have rebooted the phone a couple of times and this has not helped. The phone is rooted running the standard 2.1 rom loaded in the rooting process.

Thanks for any suggestions!
Michael

I apologize for asking a couple really stupid questions first, but I've got to double check.
Are you holding it snug up to your ear and making sure the volume is up? The Legend is known for having a somewhat quiet in-call volume.

It looks like you've rooted? I don't know all of the ins and outs of that, but I might agree with you on the software glitch part. Would it be a hassle for you to reflash your current ROM or flash a new one?

Thanks for your reply. Stupid questions are always a good place to start, but yes, I have checked the volume isn't turned down and I listened to it in a nice quite room when testing. As I said, everything still works fine with loudspeaker or handsfree, but there is really no sound at all when it's on the front speaker. The person I call can hear me no problem.

Since my first post I have reflashed the rooted 2.1 rom, and then the standard unrooted 2.2 vodafone australia rom. Nothing has changed. This leads me to conclude that it can only be a hardware fault, so I'll be sending it back for a warranty claim.

I don't suppose anyone has a different theory?

Thanks again!

Hm...Interesting...I was going to ask you if you were on a CM7 Nightly build (they've had a few of these things), but then you said you reflashed and still had the same issue....Did it ever work? If so, when and do you recall doing anything around the same time it stopped working?

I also want to point out that if you want to send it in for warranty, make sure you unroot your phone!! If you don't, the claim might not go through so well. I believe The Unlockr has an article on this.

It worked fine for a week or so, and I don't remember doing anything at the time it stopped working. I just took it in today and because it was less than 28 days old Vodafone just replaced it, so that was nice. Since I flashed the standard (non-rooted) aus vodafone 2.2 rom it won't have any trace of being rooted. (That's all the un-rooting guide says to do). I think I'll keep the new phone standard for a few months just to make sure it's working ok!

I have a slightly crazy theory about what might have caused my problem: I had the phone in one of those cases with a magnetic clasp. The little magnets are right near the front speaker when it's shut. There might just be a slim chance that the magnets interfered somehow with the speaker (which I imagine has a magnet in it) and broke it. So I haven't put it back in the case.

I know this sounds like a bit of a crazy theory, but there was no other physical reason for it to fail. Someone will say that they used a magnetic clasp case for ages with no problems, etc but there are also all kinds of posts around the web talking about these cases causing different problems on different phones. I think I might play it safe and switch to a press stud.

My legend developed the same problem today. I've tried rebooting it a couple of times to no avail. Loudspeaker is still working fine though so It's definitely looking liek the same problem as mspayne had.

The phone is about 8 months old, still in (otherwise) perfect condition. Flashed it with the AU Vodafone 2.2 ROM a couple of months ago, before that was running 2.1 (unrooted).

No idea why it would have failed now, it was working fine yesterday. It hasn't been outside since then and I haven't been mistreating it.

Looks like I get to take a trip down to the Vodafone store tomorrow, oh joy.
