Help Froyo 2.2 update fail (yellow exclamation point)

Try doing the steps you remember before from memory, just put the right version on this time. Or maybe you can connect to it via ADB?

Hmmm. That could be quite difficult. What's ADB? Never heard of that one before. Besides, when I try to boot the phone up into Download or Recovery mode it doesn't go. All it will do is just power on... no LCD screen. If I could get the SWUpdater to recognize the phone is connected and get the phone to boot in Download mode I could just re-flash. Believe me, I've tried everything at this point. Even gone so far as to download m900 USB drivers.. just in case. No go.

I don't believe there is any other way. I backed all that crap up with Titanium Backup and it wouldn't reinstall right.

Did you move the files to the app folder after restoring from Titanium Backup? I'm wondering if it's just b/c I don't have the original AmazonMP3.apk.

Can anyone upload the stock AmazonMP3.apk file for me to try? Maybe that's the only problem, in which case if I have it in the app's folder, the update will proceed. I was able to temp root and move a non-original version to the apps folder using Root Explorer. I've only ever temp rooted for an hour or so just to remove that app, nascar, and football (which now I wish I never did, though it did help my phone out a bunch back then to have that needed space!). I just really hope I can skip the need to flash, b/c even with all the awesome instructions, it scares the heck out of me! Granted I have the warranty so I can get a replacement, but with kids and work there is no way I can go a couple days without a phone, and if that's all it takes, it'll be nice to not have to re-set up a phone from scratch for things like K-9 settings, etc.

Thanks so much...I think if i can try that out I can answer that question for other people that deleted google talk!

This is your thread. Everything here applies to you. You're having the exactly same problem I did, so just follow the instructions in the previous posts (Pasta's or mine) and you're golden. You're gonna have to wipe your phone and restore it to stock, then install the update.

*cry* JOY!

I've tried every set of directions for installing the 2.2 update and this one was the only one that worked. This should really appear at the top of Google News page. :-)

Thank you and Happy Holidays!

or...even better, I wish I could modify the updater script to not look at amazonmp3.apk. I don't know enough about binaries or I'd try. I attempted to modify the script (text) to remove the two places it references Amazonmp3.apk, but it wouldn't let me save it back to the update.zip.

Glad it worked dude. :)

Or you could make a fake apk by naming a blank text file amazonmp3.apk ....but don't. :p

Or you could just follow the directions. If there was an easier way, the developers forum would've found it by now, I think.

Oh believe me I tried the blank .apk :)...looks like it needs to be the stock one to work. I just can't find the stock one anywhere.

Billkwando, where can I get the SDX Samsung Updater Patch.exe? I think that's the only thing I'm missing so that I can follow your steps to get my phone back to stock. Thanks for all of your help!

Also, Billkwando, I read about needing drivers? Is there something other than the one that lets you connect your phone to your pcs for mounting?

I found SDX Samsung Updater Patch.exe on an old post in that other forum...hoping there aren't different versions. So I think my last question before I go for it is if I need any other drivers besides the one that has always let me mount my phone when connected to my pc. Thank you sooooo much!

Hey dude, if you haven't started yet, I'm writing a post for you now. I'll edit this one so just refresh in a minute or 2.

Edit: Anyway, yeah. Part of the problem with Pastafarian's link is that the post points you off in all these different directions that make it scary. You get the update.zip on page 1, then you have to read til page 4 for the "good" directions, which then point you 2 places:

Here: http://forum.sdx-developers.com/intercept-development/intercept-recovery-%28important-features-working!%29/ <-- (copy it, cos it keeps breaking), which has the SWUpdate files, but the instructions don't apply (except for the ones telling you how to install SWUpdate, which very much do, and remind you how not to brick your phone).

And here: http//forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=806083 , which has the .tar that they recommend (and it's not the same one as in the thread with SWUpdate!?) That's why I provided a direct link to the right one prev.

The link to the patch is: https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B1g2...ThjOTktODUzYTQwNWJhMGU3&export=download&hl=en

I probably should've just linked to the files myself, but I didn't want to completely steal (and reinvent) their wheel. I guess if you make your wheel square, you have it coming.

I was probably saying "drivers" in the generic sense, when I meant software. The only actual drivers are, as you said, the phone's USB drivers. You need 5 things:

1. SWUpdate
2. The Patch for it
3. The .tar with the stock rom thingy (I linked to it in my instructions directly)
4. The update.zip with 2.2 in it
5. The Interecept USB drivers from Samsung

Took my phone to the sprint store. After an hour and a half. I'm at 2.2. They said it was giving them problems at first (I was rooted) but I'm at 2.2. I would suggest just taking your phone in, its A LOT easier.

They didn't notice you were rooted? Lucky.

I think it's working!! Doing the 2.2 update now (though I didn't try much out on the phone after the flash).

Thanks for teaching me to be much more brave! ;)

Billkwando I think we had the same idea. I made another post starting with the instructions and links to all the files needed to get this working as well. It is nice to see someone else willing to help with those having issues. For future posters it is imperative to give which phone you have VM or Sprint. This way we can help you better by directing you to your phone specific assistance.

Hello all, thanks for taking the time to put this thread together! I have a few problems though. I followed the steps in Billkwando's post, but when I get to the step of installing the update.zip, I get an "assert failed: apply_patch_check("/system/app/AccountAndSyncSettings.apk"...then a long string of random characters)" E:Error in /sdcard/update.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted.

Also, the phone does not get past the Samsung logo screen, so I am unable to use this phone as of now! I have a rooted Virgin Mobile Intercept before doing any of this by the way.

Thanks so much, please help!

EDIT: Nevermind! I ran SWUpgrade again after wiping and it seems to be working good now. I am currently applying the patch!

Oh, good. I was afraid you'd boarded the brick train to Brickington. Gotta make sure the phone boots up correctly after SWUpdate before proceeding. :)

Hey all, thanks for the replies. I do have another issue. The phone runs great aside from the fact that the GPS does not work. It finds no signal at all. Also, google maps is very sluggish, could be just the new version, I don't know. Has anyone else experienced this behavior? I applied the SlapKernal(SlapKernel 1.1 for Froyo 2.2 [easy root via SWUpgrade] [Battery mod]) after flashing in order to remove sprint apps, but that is all I changed.

Thanks!

You should probably report the issue over there so they can research and track it. I read through all 6 pages of that thread and didn't see one mention of GPS, so it could be that yours is an isolated case, or it could be that nobody's spotted the bug yet cos nobody's tried it yet. The only problems I've seen are people reporting that it's killing their battery.

I'd give those guys a chance to address your issue first, since they're the experts. Even so, there have been complaints about GPS not working correctly with the stock 2.2 update, but I used Google Maps navigation yesterday for a 7 mile trip that included highway exits, and it worked perfectly (except for telling us the destination too late for us to avoid passing it and hanging a u-turn, lol)....so I'm not one of the folks having a problem.

I will say one thing about joining that forum. Their captcha is horribly annoying (where you have to type the messed up letters in the pic to prove you're not a bot). It took me 15 or 20 minutes to join cos it was so hard to see, and I kept having to re-input information. I almost gave up.

Thanks for the detailed reply! I posted a thread on the sdx boards.

Do you think reflashing would help?
