Froyo 2.2 update on Droid

With Motorola saying that they are unsure if they will port 2.2 to Milestone, which apart from the radio is identical to the Droid, are we even getting 2.2?

Motorola said that they were polling their people on whether or not to continue preparing 2.2 for the GSM version of the Droid.

So the question again is now that they've said that it is 50-50 if they will release 2.2 for the GSM version of the Droid, are they still even producing it from the CDMA version of the Droid?

Thus far in the "leaked" builds of 2.2 for Droid, wireless tethering is NOT in (wired is though). No one is sure if it will make it into the final release.

The speed of 2.2 is amazing. I'm not sure if this will make it in to the final update, but the leaks all had the processor already overclocked to 800mhz. That plus JIT (Just in time compiler) makes the phone amazingly fast.

You do need to be rooted to control overclocking. So imagine if you will, the stock rom is really fast running at 800 mhz. Overclocking to 1 Ghz (Most Droids are capable of that) is even faster. Some Droids can get to 1.2 Ghz (and some slightly faster). Overclocking also allows you to control scenarios. So for example, with the battery above 50%, you are at 1 Ghz, but if the battery drops below 50%, it will automatically downclock the CPU to 800 Mhz (or whatever you choose). There are several options on this including battery remaining, speed while charging, speed under certain heat constraints, etc...

Hope that helped a bit...

So are you saying that it is possible to OC without root?

I am pretty new to the smartphone world and just recently got a Motorola Droid. I am still learning the ins and outs of these phones, and was wondering when Froyo 2.2 comes out will my phone automatically update to it or do I have to go somewhere and download it? Thanks for any help!

I am wondering the same exact thing! I just got the Droid X. When it comes out, where will the notification be that it is available for download? Where do I download it? Or will it be automatically updated to my phone. I just wish I knew the answers! I tempted to call Verizon myself. I would never go to a store they would shun me for not buying my device there.

nccan,
The Droid X is brand new, so I don't doubt that they will be updating to 2.2 and probably beyond. The Droid 1 is "End of Life", meaning discontinued, and possibly no longer supported. Motorola said in mid June that it was going to receive the update, but since then they've pretty much decided not to update the GSM version, so I am wondering aloud since there has only been crickets for a while now, even though it was sent to a few at the end of May. With other companies deciding not to upgrade earlier phones to 2.1 after having promised to do so for months, it is a reasonable question.

When I got my Droid 1 earlier this year, when Best Buy activated it, it immediately wanted to download and install 2.1. They call this OTA - over the air install. That is how the update Droid X is getting very soon now will arrive, and how 2.2 will arrive. You will find your phone with a pop up asking you if you want to do that now.

I was wondering since I have the Eris, will the 2.2 be available for my phone? I was thinking of rooting because my friend mentioned it but I don't know because the idea for me to root was to get themes and I've bought aHome and others and I like it. But far as update when will it be available?

Didn't Eris just receive its final update? Check the usual Android news sources. I suspect that in the future, you'll have to go with voiding your warranty when you are willing to risk it, and getting a home-brew ROM. I hear they are very good, I just am not in a position to run that risk.

Eris will not get Froyo (2.2). And if you root, it will not void your warranty. Also, if you bough the 3rd party wireless provider handset insurance, that covers loss, theft, and ANY damage. There may be a small fee at time of claim.

Top of screen in notification bar. This is where you'll see a notification you have an update available for download. Touch this area and then message. Make sure you have a minimum of 30% battery when you start download. Wifi is recommended but not necessary. Follow on-screen prompts. And lastly, RELAX!!! These things take time to get pushed out to everyone's handsets! You'll get it soon enough.

We are all waiting for 2.2

I believe HTC earns points and marked percentage by giving this pri..

Lets all enjoy the waiting by using 2.1 with a big happy smile. Btw? should i root my Desire? and why?

HTC with the extra burden of its proprietary interface is releasing 2.2 to the much more recent Incredible at the end of the month or early August.

What could the hold-up be with Motorola for the Droid? They've had a presumably decent beta since the end of May, have missed projected release times, have said they aren't sure they will release it for Milestone, and no word confirming that they still will be releasing it for the Droid.

Motorola, can you confirm that you are still releasing 2.2 for the Droid, for certain?

As to not voiding the warranty, that is the first assertion I've heard that rooting won't void the warranty. Is there confirmation of this?

My theory is that Droid2 will be released with Froyo so the Droid won't get it until after the Droid2 is released and has been out for a bit.
Yup, that's what I think

Cyanogen's wiki says that rooting your Droid WILL void your warranty, contrary to what HaulinPain mislead people on, above.

If you root, you can also un-root. If you have had your device longer than six months, you don't have a warranty anyway. I rooted Droid on VZW and had hardware issues with the camera. Took it to a corporate store and they commented on BB mod and how good it was. Then they gave me a new Droid. This was in Charlottesville, Va. So before you go and commit slander, find out the facts!

I'm not clear on how citing Cyanogen's wiki is slander. I would think that would be going for what a reasonable person could reasonably conclude were the facts. If I knew that I would have the same result as you had, I'd be reading up on how to do it. :-) But my experience with VZW isn't quite as good. My Touch failed in the EPROM so that it wouldn't hold the TCP/IP information and password. So I had no internet. After many hours and days of many hours on the phone, they did quit charging me for internet, but my alternative was to pay more than I paid for it originally to get a refurb that might have had the same problems. So I waited until I got my Droid. And all I had done on the Touch was try to run Android 1.5 off of the SD card. . .(I can't see how that would cause the EPROM to lose registers)

I'm glad it worked for you. Could this be one of those YMMV things?

It IS my understanding - and maybe I'm wrong, or out of date on this, but once you root, a bit is flipped letting them know that you've done so, even if you go back to the official version. Is that true?

I apologize for being a lil rude. Got a bad headache and hate being called a liar (mislead... a rose by any other name is still a rose.).

As for the bit being flipped, not sure on that one.

Maybe this holds true for everything in life= Saying hello and chatting things up gets you the same distance as the end of a gun. The difference is the other party is more willing to go on their own.

Referring to my dealing with the techies at VZW.

Downloaded and installed Peter Alfonso's bugless v.04...
perfect. Don't mess with anything else... what do you really need past 800mhz overclock anyway?
