Froyo Released For UK Orange !!!

Thanks - I'm willing to give that a go but I still worry that something is odd abut my Kies download. Can somebody who has succeeded in getting the firmware upgrade please check what version of Kies they have, and report here?

It seems very unusual for the FULL version number to not be shown in the "about" section of a program, in my experience.

"I reminded them that it's only officially out on Orange"...

Which I'm on. But I seem to have slipped through some sort of net in that I have an "i5800 on Orange", bought as such, but this is not the same as an "Orange i5800".

Apparently.

you dont have the orange handset mate you have the same one as me - its not out yet - apparently it is in a week...

the only handset getting it officially is the i5801.. you have the i5800.

Yes I do... but if you go to the Samsung website and ask for available updates for the i5800 (not i5801) it shows you an available firmware update for it... plus an updated pdf manual for "Froyo UK and Cyprus"). You then can't get to the update using Kies... which is kind of where I came in.

When it comes down to it I bought an i5800 on Orange - I didn't deliberately buy an unbranded/unlocked phone and stick an Orange SIM in it. It was a package. So is it unreasonable to expect the update at the same time as other Orange users?

It would be nice to have an official statement from one or all of Samsung, Orange or Carphone Warehouse with a definitive answer and a definite date.

thats standard practice from carphone warehouse - they have the same unlocked handset and just sell you the contract / sim you want. you'll find that a lot of people, including myself would rather have an unbranded phone like this.

They've, maybe rather stupidly / prematurely updated their website generically to show froyo manuals without everyone having (official) access to froyo yet.. go figure..

its coming. wait a week.

Yeah I have heard about the Orange branding thing, but kind of after the fact. I've never had an obviously branded phone in the past so this one just looked normal to me.

I think maybe the only thing we can be sure of happening "in a week" is next Thursday!

I got mine from CPW too, after reading the above I took out my Orange SIM and swapped it for a Three SIM and it seems they sold me an unlocked phone too.

It never crossed my mnd that it might be unlocked but I did notice that it doesn't have any orange branding on it.

Until I updated to froyo I was getting a decent fix with GPS in some rooms of my house. (It was putting me in the shed, about 10-15 metres away - and that was without wifi enabled). Now it's back to how it was when I got the phone - about half a mile down the road. It's okay when I go outside though. When I was first got the phone it would put me in bleeding Kensington and I'm in the midlands! It hasn't done that for ages, thankfully.

It must be something with the phone as the GPS placed me in Kensington and I'm in Newport South Wales! And it also places me approximately half a mile away as well.

I got fed up with waiting - the wifi connection issue I had with 2.1 was driving me nuts and that was driving my other half nuts so he used the upgrade method at the top of the forum.

So far, so good... I now have 2.2 and it's much better now.
