how do i start up my htc desire? its frozen on the start up screen?

That's very hard to answer without knowing why it has frozen.

You could try pulling the battery out for a couple of minutes (if it's one of the Desire models with a removable battery), or force a shutdown/restart by pressing and holding the power key (if it's one without a removable battery).

On the original Desire you could boot into "safe mode" by booting while holding the menu key down. That means it would load the OS but no user-installed apps. If it boots in that state then the problem is one of your apps (or its data). Not sure how you do it on the most recent Desires.

Conceivably if you have something corrupt on the SD card that might affect booting, so try again with the card removed.

Assuming none of that works:

If the problem is due to a corrupted app or data (including settings) then a factory reset will fix it. Shut the phone down, then restart it while holding the "volume down" key down. You will get the bootloader menu, from which you select recovery. Once in recovery, press "volume up" and power keys, and that should get you the recovery menu. Select factory reset from there (remove SD card first, just to make sure that isn't wiped).

If the problem is a hardware failure then none of that will help, and possibly you won't even be able to do that stuff.
