Frustration with available sizes...

Man I just can't win and it's really getting frustrating.

All these new devises are HUGE and I HATE it.

I currently own and use a Gen 1 Droid Incredible, 3.7", Verizon.

I have used and enjoy 4" devices but unless it's a 4G phone, there is NO point in me upgrading.

We are 'hopefully' weeks away from 4G service here in Columbia MO so I am getting excited that I'll be able to effectively upgrade for a purpose.

The problem is, all these awesome spec devices and they're all as huge as license plates.

Example: The Rezound was released a few days ago. It's a spec beast, including display and cameras...attention to details in every category that I like and enjoy about HTC Verizon phones...except it's size.

I know it's only a 4.3" device...and there are 4.5" offerings, but when I compare it to my Incredible...I just cannot stomach having to hold something so massive.

Why is it so hard for HTC to make a REAL replacement for the Incredible? They blew it with the Incredible II...releasing it without 4G radios. That in itself would have filled a huge niche for buyers like myself that enjoy a phone that's not the same size as a card table.

It's just frustrating. Thousands of Android phones to choose from, and I don't have a 4" option from HTC for my jump into 4G. Frustrating.

Agree completely. All these mini-tablets and no high-end choices in a more reasonable size. But there was already another thread about this.

I fully understand what you are saying. I guess we will have to wait until the massive screen size phase starts to taper down and battery technology catches up with phone technology.

I don't mean this to be an insult but hopefully with the release of the HTC Rhyme (tailored for the female gender) you will get your choice of 3.7-4inch screen and 4G phone with smaller dimensions. I know I would definitely consider it.

I know what your talking about...
I just came from a Samsung Gravity to a GSII myself, I thought I was going to need a man purse to lug this mini monitor around at first, lol, took a while to get used to it. Everyone still says "Man that's huge" Which sets me up perfectly to reply "That's what she said" So I'll live with it :)

Not insulted, but you do kind of bring up a good point that also leads to a new aspect of the discussion.

Starter / free phones are usually small and they lack the specs of the big blockbuster phones. They also tend to be the phones that females get because they simply cannot realistically hold a phone larger than 3.7" - 4" without looking ridiculous.

When I bought my Incredible, my Wife bought an Eris. That phone was junk. She then traded up to an LG Vortex. That phone was better, but still was junk with it's lack of processor power, RAM, and internal storage. My Incredible was fine for her but by the time we found out the smaller female sized phones were garbage you couldn't get the Incredible anymore.

In fact, my Wife just defected to the iPhone 4 side because there isn't a quality phone with good specs for her to use. The overall dimensions of the iPhone 4 are almost the exact same as mine, though the specs are on par with all new phones, and the screen is only a hair smaller.

I just texted and asked because I'm curious. I asked my Wife why all 13 ladies in her office all have iPhones. Most said they were the best, but the ONLY alternate reason was because the small phones from Android sucked.

That beings said, all the main manufacturers could knock out two birds with one stone.

Build a 3.7" - 4" phone that has top tier tech, and they'll meet the needs of MOST female Android users, as well as male users such as myself that hate the mammoth phones being released.

The Rhyme? Again, tailored for females, and even the reviews state that it was not given the higher specs because it's screen size is in the sub 4" range. Not to mention it's purple, has a light they call a Charm, and it's not a 4G phone.

Their message is clear...if you want high specs...get a big screen. If you don't care about high specs you can settle for the smaller phones that they try to sell to females.

HTC...if you're reading, make a 4" high end 4G phone, and you'll get back a lot of the market that iPhone has simply because they are alienated by the sizes you offer.

I sometimes get the feeling that manufacturers of android handsets are just catering to the vocal hardware geeks who think MOAR = better. It's frustrating if you want a device that performs well, has reasonable battery life, and can fit unobtrusively in a suit jacket or pants pocket.

Phone makers are also trying to get people to want Android on a bigger screen and boost tablet sales. Currently the Android tablet market isn't nearly as popular as iOS but most phone manufacturers have at least 1 tablet available. If they can get people used to the bigger screens they think those people will want android on an even bigger screens.

On second thought, HTC can solve this almost immediately without developing a new phone. Okay...wait for it...

...add a 4G radio to the Incredible II, and call it the Incredible II 4G.

Boom, problem solved.

I feel you.. I personally like big screens and whatnot but some phones these days are so big. My hands are too small for many of them too. TOO BIG.

The HTC Rhyme is 3.7". 4g is a huge gimmick right now. Huge battery suck too.
The Rhyme is really a mid-range femme-phone (not that there's anything wrong with that). There is no top-tier 4" or under phones available or planned I'm aware of. So I'll probably keep using this HTC G2 for at least another year.

4G is a gimmick only if you don't need or use it. LTE 4G definitely hits the battery hard but HSPA+ 4G is really about like 3G power-wise. I'm in no hurry at all to go LTE.

Hopefully VZW will get an atrix type phone in their stable. The atrix with a 4 inch screen isnt bad and also the Atrix 2 isnt bad either with a 4.3 in display.

I agree. Even my wife complain about the size AND weight. I have the Moto Milestone and it was *heavy* with the qwerty keyboard. So when she get one, she goes for Defy without keyboard. It is *light* but then she still complain about the screen size and suddenly she stop complaining when she start to use a lot of Android apps and find the screen is too small to cram information. It would be even worse if the screen size is smaller.

I was at Best Buy last night and they had display models of both the Rezound and the Razr. The Razr was ginormous in my hand. I felt like I was wrapping my hands around a brick. The Rezound actually didn't seem any bigger in my hand than the DInc 2 I'm using now. It didn't seem as wide as the Razr, but instead was longer and taller. It struck me as a phone I could possibly use except it was way too tall.

I've got the thunderbolt and while at first it may seem like the screen is huge after a short period of time it becomes natural feeling. I can't stand trying to do things on smaller screens now. Even when I tried playing with my friend's nexus s it seemed cramped

I though I would dislike these big phones but I really like the GS2. The thinness makes it easy enough to handle.

I guess Motorola is still producing very man-suited mobile devices. It has been that way and seems a tradition. I wonder if Moto has overlooked the female market segment. HTC, Samsung seem to fare better in this segment.

When my Wife and I were at Verizon the other night getting her the iPhone4, I layed out a few phones to get side by side comparisons of them.

HTC Rezound
Motorola Razr
HTC Droid Incredible II
iPhone4 (Wife's)
HTC Droid Incredible (Mine)

It looked like a service bar advertisement. My Inc and the iPhone were almost identical. The Inc II was barely bigger than iPhone, and then there was a HUGE noticeable difference in the step up to the Razr, which is wider and taller than the Inc II, and finally the Rezound was almost as wide as the Razr plus it was taller. It was massive.

The sales rep and I even put the Rezound next to the Droid X2, and they were literally fighting for airspace in the room.

I tried pocket tests in my jeans. Luckily I was wearing a hoodie because that was the only pocket I felt comfortable putting the Rezound in. LOL.
