Help Full recovery procedure for crash + re-boot cycling HTC Desire

Jon March

Newbie
If you have problems with a crash + re-boot cycling HTC Desire, e.g. after installing HTC_Desire_Android_2.3_Upgrade (Gingerbread)...

This is HOW TO really clear all data out of your HTC Desire (and/but leaving the OS installation unchanged)

Remove battery
Insert battery (and SIM, not SD card) (See PS. at end)

Hold volume-down and press and release power button

HBOOT screen will show

Select "CLEAR STORAGE"

CLEAR STORAGE screen will show

Select ""Yes"

Feedback will be
"Clear....."
Done"
and then the device will re-boot itself

Interrupt the reboot by doing
Remove battery
Insert battery (and SIM and SDcard)

HBOOT screen will show

Select "RECOVERY"

htc screen will show
Reading storage screen (circulating arrows) will show briefly
Red triangle + ! screen will show

Immediately... hold volume-UP and press and release power button

The Android system recovery screen will show

Select "Wipe cache partition"

At the bottom the feedback will be
"-- Wiping cache...
Formatting cache...
Cache wipe complete..."

Now select "Reboot system now"

And wait...

htc screen will show
you'll get the annoying jingle (not so quietly brilliant ;-)

and few seconds after that you should have a cache wiped, storage cleared, SD Card unchanged, factory reset HTC Desire with whatever version of android you had previously installed/upgraded to go....

Touch gesture down to unlock and start (re)configuring your device

I need help with this :o

I got to the part where I press recovery in HBOOT, but it gets stuck on the HTC boot screen again and wont do this:

htc screen will show
Reading storage screen (circulating arrows) will show briefly
Red triangle + ! screen will show

any help please??

Hi there,

Give HTC a call, the tech support was surprisingly good when I got hold of them.

I ended up getting my device repaired free of charge by them. It seems my main board was faulty and I got what is basically a new phone with my old cover attached.

New / repaired phone works just great now :-)
