I had a Chevy van with a 3 speed on the column. I think 3 on the column is history (and rightly so).
I remember that if I had to back out of a place, I had to put the van in reverse before I turned off the motor. If I left it in first, I'd have to get under and hit the linkage with a hammer. I kept a hammer in the van for that purpose.
