Have you spent time in Germany? I haven’t.
Perhaps I should recheck with my friend (grew up there).

I spent a few weeks in Vienna, Austria. Google Translate came in very handy there. I found very nice, helpful people there. The food was great, the classical music was extraordinary, and the public transportation very efficient.

Until COVID came around, Mrs. Notes and I like to travel somewhere different every year. We've been as far away as China and Australia and as close as 49 US states, Canada and Mexico.

When we started, pre smartphone, we used phrase books. Also, before going we learn a few courtesy phrases, it helps a lot if you try to speak the language and can show you put effort into it.

49 States? - What was unattractive about Wyoming? :p
(I see what you meant now)

I agree definitely try to make an effort with the lingo. I first ventured "abroad" to France at the age of 34, and it was particularly true there.

It makes sense. If you show an effort to be friendly and meet them a bit on their terms, most people will return the favor and reach out to you.

The state I haven't visited yet is Hawaii.

I have been to Washington DC, Puerto Rico, all the US Virgin Islands, but I haven't been to Guam, American Samoa, or the Mariana Islands either -- yet.

Mrs. Notes and were planning Madagascar when COVID arrived.

We travel once a year, we have at least 50 places we want to visit, and it's extremely doubtful we have 50 more years to do it. Unfortunately, COVID has taken two years away, and may take more. But we are lucky, others have lost a lot more than potential vacations.

We travel independently. The only country we took a tour in was China. It's possible to get around China independently, but I couldn't read the road signs, bus schedules and/or train schedules in those Chinese characters. If a country uses Roman letters, even if I can't pronounce it properly, I can recognize the words. Going on the tour was like seeing China from an isolated bubble, so every night we would take a hotel business card (so we can hail a cab and get back) and explored on our own.
