I remember ducking and hiding under my desk in elementary school and realizing one day that perhaps my desk wouldn't really save me. I don't recall what we had for lunch that day, could've been pizza ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
We used the safety provided by our desks for both tornados and a nuclear attack. I didn't really buy into it saving me but it was fun scooting them together and crawling under them. I'm not sure what they served us for lunch. It was never pizza. I remember it cost thirty five cents a day which only the rich kids ate.

I didn't think they ever really served pizza but I brought my lunch, sometimes in a real lunchbox!, and bought milk.
We don't really have many tornadoes where I am but rumor had it we were a prime bomb area. There could be some truth in that but I don't honestly know. We took our hiding seriously.

We had to use our desks in the same manner, but it was for earthquakes. That made sense for a short time, then I started to see how flimsy the decks were and opted for the door instead. Third trip to the principles office for "not following the rules" I got to teach them all a lesson in physics. I still thank my uncle for showing me where the things they called "desks" would fail once hit with a falling roof.

We did that for an A-Bomb.

And we didn't have a school cafeteria, we brought our own. We had cool lunchboxes with superhero or something girly themes (depending on the gender). The thermos bottle was included in the box and held in the lid.

As I got older, we no longer hid under the desk, and they had a cafeteria, but I still brought my own. But in a brown bag, because you could then buy a carton of milk for a dime.
