Actually, we did have a rotary phone that weighed a ton as well. The wooden one was the extension phone Really it was. You could answer calls on it but couldn't dial out.
That's not quite true. If you lifted the receiver off of the hook you got a dial tone. With practice you could place a call by clicking the hook the number of times for each number of the person you were calling. A number with a lot of nines and zeros was a real bear.
Those rotary phones were really super heavy, could use them as a weapon! I'm afraid all the check-boxes (except @olbriar's wooden phone) have been checked. Thanks for ruining my day so early
