Help Funny smell coming from battery, HELP!!

Upon repairing NY phone the black layer of the battery scratched off a bit but now whenever the phone is on it releases an odd smell which I know is definitely from the battery. If I wrap electrical masking tape (black tape) around the whole battery do you think it would block the smell? Its only a temporary fix until I can send it for repair.

It surprisingly did XD . The smell is minimized a little but its still definitely there -_- . I'm about to just say f it and get a Moto G GPE
