Root G Tab

Bob Cat

Careful, They're sharp!!
Howdy y'all. Got a Gtab today. It's already been rooted with TnT. I've been lurkin the forum for a few days before getting it. I look forward to learning a few things from you guys. :D

Glad you can join us. :D

Thanks. So I fired it up this morning connected to my wifi (wireless tethering from my eris) and try to surf the market and no go.:( No web either. I know this got to be something simple because it cinnected yesterday when I took it out of the box to check it out. I used my phone yesterday as well. It say's it's connected.

TnT Enhanced
2.2
TnT-Enhanced v3.1.4b
2.6.32.9-00000-10.8.2-dirty
hundson@tapntapsvn #16
FRF 91

Wireless Tether 2.0.7 from the Market.

I bought it from Martimus but he probably has a wireless setup in his house. I live in the sticks so there's no roadrunner or such. I have to use the usb mobile broadband from verizon and I use wired tether from usb on my rooted Eris for my desktop and when I start to reach my 5gb cap I use the wireless tether app for my laptop and another rooted eris I use to test roms and things with.

I would change roms. I would suggest vegan or if you like tnt lite...I would at least be on TNT 4.4. I'm not sure if TnT 2.2 had adhoc tethering enabled which you need to use wireless tethering.

Honestly I have gingerbread on both phones and I want to tether so I'll probably go with vegan. Is it pretty smooth?

I think it's super smooth. :D If you think TnT 2.2 is smooth..you'll like Vegan.

Just the little reading I've done here you guys root and flash differently than we do with the eris. I don't use rom manager and clockwork mod. When going to a newer version I download it to my sd card, boot into recoverey, wipe dalvic-cache and flash it. Or when I go from one rom to another I wipe factory data/reset and flash it. Since the tab is already rooted is there a simple procedure to flash a different rom? Is it simply just downloading the rom and flashing? I think I'll do Vegan can you link that rom or is it in these threads somewhere?

power down and hold the volume + button and power button at the same time to boot into clockwork recovery, you will be able to flash a ROM from there. all the info you need is here:

http://androidforums.com/gtablet-al...-install-custom-rom-fix-market-add-flash.html

just start at step 2 since clockwork will already be on your device.

Maybe it's the P.O.S. Rom you have installed on your Eris. Maybe it's just a crappy build and won't support what you need it for :eek: LOL

Problem solved. There's a little thing in Wireless Tether called Access Control. It's amazing what works with superuser permission.;):D

When trying to access the market it says "No matching content in Android Market". Is it because I haven't changed roms yet? I was thinking of vegan 5.1.1. Is that the most stable rom that's more Android like my phone? I experiment and change roms all the time with my phone so I don't need to do that with my tab. I also see at the begining of the roms threads about a locked bootloader. Where do I look for that to see if I have one?

If you want an Android phone look on your gTab, I'd recommend either one of the Vegan ROMS, or the current Cyanogenmod build for the gTab ... both of those choices are great. I'm using the Ginger edition of the Vegan ROM right now, and am very happy with it.

The current version of that ROM lacks hardware video acceleration, so I'd stick with Vegan 5.1.1 if you watch a lot of high-res video, but development of that ROM has basically ended, so otherwise I'd go with one of the newer Gingerbread builds. The current Cyanogen build already some video acceleration working, and I suspect both it and Vegan Ginger will be improving in that area rapidly.

The warnings about "locked bootloaders" over at XDA turned out to not to be accurate, but there are definitely two different stock bootloaders out in the wild ... 1.1 and 1.2. Do some research, but unless you deliberately snagged the upgrade that included the 1.2 bootloader, you've almost certainly got 1.1. (The 1.2 upgrade was withdrawn by ViewSonic after only a day or so of release.) There's only one developer doing work with 1.2-based ROMs right now, and at least for the time being my advice would be to stick with 1.1. Both Vegan and Cyanogen are 1.1-based.

And yep ... if you install one of the primary custom ROMs, you should get Market access along with it. :)

Yeah did you see the rothnic thread? Geez, I swear that forum is so messed up. Optimism is not a welcome trait over there. Its true a couple bad apples ruins the bunch.

Anyways, the latest pershoot kernel some hardware acceleration was enabled on the gb roms. I've tried it with vegan gb and you tube HQ and most of the 720p vids I've tried worked a lot better. CM nightlies are pretty good too, no need to flash the pershoot kernel since its built in.

Do you bounce around roms or do you stick to one? I checked a couple roms and they don't seem to be updated often. What is your opinion of vegin gb? I want to flash one time and hang with it.

Not really, I don't consider myself a rom hopper. I have vegan 5.1.1 as my fall back rom. I have it backed up all the time so if I see a rom or a nightlie that I like I can give it a go without worrying too much. Right now I'm on CM nightlie 64, I like it so far. Its stable and video is much better but like I said on other threads I'm not a 1080p kind of guy. As for vegan gb, its nice especially with pershoots new kernel. It'll do its job for the most part.

Yeah, there's always something going on over there to make my eyes roll. I don't know why it is, but anytime you get two Android devs in the same virtual space, drama is bound to ensue!

When I first got my gTab I tried most of the major ROMs, just to see what I liked and what I didn't. That made me settle on Vegan, and I've stuck with Vegan Ginger ever since it was released. I may move back to CM, though, if there's not a Vegan update fairly soon.

For me, at least, it's lots of fun to try all the different ROMs initially, but the excitement in constantly switching ROMs wears off pretty fast. There's more to life than just constantly re-flashing my phone and tablet.

Yea I'm kinda burnt out on flashing different roms. Been there done that. It looked like the last update for vegan gb was 4/11. I really don't feel like flashing different roms on the gtab. So does cm7 look to be the one to put on?

Yeah, I think if I were just setting up a gTab now I'd go with CM7 ... but I'd probably keep an eye out for the next version of Vegan, too. (I'm sure there will be one, one of these days.)

If you go with CM7, I'd separately download the launcher program that the Vegan developer has created -- it's called VTL Launcher, and it's excellent, designed specifically for tablets.
