Help g1 backlight issue

I have a g1 and everytime I open or shut it my backlight goes out but the screen stays active... any ideas on how to fix this? Or even what's causing it?
 
When you say "open or shut it" are you referring to the keyboard?

What version of Android is on the device? Stock?

BTW, there's a band called "fields of the nephilim", though I expect you already know this.
