G1 not connecting to computer

I have bought a G1 from a friend and he has only given a USB cable. I have tried connecting the phone to my computer (Windows 7) but its not coming up in My Computer. The computer makes a noise when the USB is connected but no Autoplay window opens up and nothing is there on the phone to access the phone. I have tried using different cables and the same things.....

I found it in under Devices and Printer but it is called Android Phone and when I right click it the only options are Create Shortcut, Troubleshoot and Properties so I can't go in to the phone. I have gone through Properties and updated the driver but still nothing and I can't get in......

Please could you help urgently because I want to access my phone through the computer. Also, I am running on Android 1.6 so no roots on the phone and I have recently Factory reset it when I got the phone..............

Yes I do have an SD card in the phone. Today I put the USB cable in and tried connecting again and the Autoplay options came up and I was able to put a few albums on the phone for about 5 mins until it disappeared and I couldn't access the phone again....what should I do?

Welcome to the Android Forums!

There are several things that you can try. First off, have you tried plugging the USB cable into a different USB port on the computer? Second, when the cable is plugged into both the computer and your phone, try pulling down the notification bar. Does the phone recognize that it has a USB connection? What mode does the phone show that it's currently in (it should display on the notification bar)?

There are generic USB drivers available for the G1 but I've read elsewhere that they are not typically needed for the G1.

Another thing to check might be whether or not USB debugging is enabled on the phone. If it is then you might want to try turning it off. This setting can be found Menu -> Settings -> Aplication -> Development.

Yes to the first question. To the second question, the notification bar say Turn off USB Storage (after I mount the G1 to the comp) but then after 2 mins of putting music etc, the window for the Removable Disk disappears and the notification bar goes back to the Mount option and I mount the G1 but then the notification bar says Turn off USB Storage but then changes to Preparing SD Card and then back to the Mount options. I try to do Mount again but I keep going round in circles.....Also I have tried both with debugging on and off and the same thing is happening i.e. not staying on the computer. However, when I turned debugging off, Windows said that the device had malfunctioned/Windows doesn't know what it is basically and I can see it in Devices and Printer and it is called Android Phone and when I click Properties, it says The device is working correctly........Now what should I do!? :)

Also, I forgot to mention, when I turned Debugging off, the notification bar stays on Turn off USB storage but I still can't access the phone......
