Root G1 rom help

Newbie
Rooted G1 running 1.6 - have tried various ROMS renamed update.zip on the root level of the FAT32-formatted SD card.

Pointing at them with ROM Manager, and running standard boot to update.zip in Recovery Mode yields the same error:

E:can't open /cache/recovery/command
