Help Galaxy 10.1 Help please

Bryden

Lurker
Last week I purchased a Samsung Galaxy - first thing my computer doesn't recognise the device - is there a driver or similar I should d/l or install please?

Second - I have a number of books on my desktop which I want to transfer to my tablet - the main purpose of buying it was as a reader.... my friend emailed books to herself to get them on her tablet... surely there has to be a better way? Can't I copy them into a folder on Windows Explorer or similar....

TIA

Bryden

You need to install Kies on your computer so the device can be read as a mounted storage device, so you can move ebooks. Kies includes the drivers for Samsung devices.

I have Kies on my computer - guess I have not investigated this sufficiently - I feel like I am speaking a different language than the rest of you at the moment... I do appreciate the help.... so if I open Kies and put my books into a folder in that programme - is that the method please?

No open Kies, then connect the tab. You'll have to wait for a while, there will an "installing drivers" icon on your taskbar, and depending on your computer or even internet connection, it can take anywhere from 3min to 30min before that stops. After that, that's the only time you'll be able to use the device connected to the computer. It wont happen again afterwards.

Truth be told, for any hardware device you connect to a computer (mice, flash drives, keyboards etc), you'll have to wait for that process to finish. This one would just take longer.

Hi ..
I have the Galaxy Tab 7, which is very similar. I never bother with kies . Go to Settings / Wireless and Networks / USB settings /Mass storage

Then connect to your PC with a USB cable and the tablet storage shows up as removable drives. Just drag and drop .. much simpler. :)

I did not say he needed to USE Kies. He just needs it on his PC for complete drivers. I have Kies on my PC but never opened it except for official OS updating.

The Tab should be recognized by your computer without the need for any drivers. Kies is a useful tool for some but it can be faster and easier to just connect the device and go to My Computer and you should see it as an external hard drive.

********However!********

If you are running windows XP you may run into a problem. The Tab does not play nice with all pc's running XP. I had an XP machine and the tab would NOT connect to it no matter what I did. Drivers included. I was desperately in need of a new laptop so I upgraded to a new one with windows 7. I then connected the tab and it was instantly recognized. I'm not saying that this is the case for everyone, but others have had the same problems I had with XP. So, if you're running XP then that may be your issue. Just something to be aware of and take into consideration.

LOL. This is one of the most misinformed posts I've read in a while. If your PC can read it as mass storage, that means you have the hardware drivers for it. If you dont have the proper and specific hardware drivers, not even a basic flash drive storage would work. Everything you connect to a PC (mice, external hard drives, cellphones, dongles), needs drivers to work. Some computers are able to download the drivers on their own without the need for installing Kies. However, Kies is good to have on your computer for the mere convenience of say, official updates. Not everyone wants to flash buggy custom ROMs, even if faster. Also installation of Kies would bring the latest official version of the needed drivers, including drivers PC's dont usually download by themselves, like MTP drivers.

Using the Tab as mass storage may or may not need new drivers for your PC, simply because you may have had another device which uses generic drivers that recognize the Tab. If his PC had those, the moment he connected his device to PC, it should have been recognized even without Kies installed on his PC, which in this case, drivers seem to have never been installed properly.

Second, the XP problem is an issue of wrong drivers. XP, Vista, 7, all have separate sets of drivers. So even if you download the drivers, if they aren;t compatible with your OS, nothing will happen.

I installed the drivers via Kies - still the same position - my tablet shows up in Windows Explorer but without a drive letter beside it... when I go to the Taskbar to do the unplug routine it identifies the tablet with F, G, H and I - obviously doesn't know which USB port it is plugged into... sigh...

The tablet, as I said, appears in WE - if I want to treat it like additional storage, and for instance wanted to copy a book over, whereabouts would I put the book? Which, if any, of the subfolders? TIA Bryden (Mrs)

hi bryden
good to have another kiwi on the forum. l have mine in a folder called ebooks but I cannot remember if it was already there or I made it. your reader should then find it when you ask it to import books.
once you have it sorted you will love it, but out does take a bit of getting used to.
bridge:)

"Take a bit of getting used to".... love it... you are a master of understatement! I do think I will enjoy it, once I get the system sorted out in my mind and in practice... I am intrigued/concerned that my desktop doesn't see the Galaxy as another drive and is confused over which USB port it is plugged into.... next I have to find a Sudoku apps... another hobby of mine which wastes countless hours... however, they are mine to waste, and if I want to do this, so be it....

The Net has really made the world a village and I love it for that alone... I have email friends all over the world, from UK, to Zimbabwe, to Toronto etc. Sssshhhh... but I still think New Zealand is THE best place to live....

When I imported the last/first batch of books I clicked Import and then had to use browse to find the various folders...

I use my Tab as an ereader all the time. I've found it easiest to just put my epubs in Dropbox and then move it out to a My Docs\Books folder using HD File Manager once I've downloaded it. There was a learning curve with it but it's worth it. I LOVE my Tab.

Mavis - I tried to follow your suggestions - opened settings in the tablet, chose Wireless and Networks - this gave me a choice of flight mode, Wifi, wifi settings, Kies via wifi, Bluetooth, Bluetooth settings and VPN settings - nothing on storage. under the Wireless and Networks link on the lefthand side there is Storage but again this merely tells me the space on the device and how much in each section of Applications, Downloads, Pictures videos, audio, miscellaneous files and how much is available... neither option shows anything to do with USB or mass storage...

with the drive letter not appearing it seems that you must right click on "my computer" then on " "manage". You then click on ..... Aargh now I have forgotten but you need to change the drive letter. Ill look tomorrow morn and let you know. Its 11 pm in South Africa now and im off to la la land.

I had a problem like this with another gadget a while ago. Here is what i did on Windows 7.
Click on Start
Right click my "My Computer"
Click "Manage"
Click "Disk Management"
Look for the Samsung under the different disks listed and right click on it to change drive letter and path
Change it to a letter you dont haze a drive for already
I used the letter Z as I would need 26 drives in the future to get there. You can also change it to S for Samsung to make it easier to remember. I hope this helps.

I have never used Kies.

My XP computer doesn't recognise my device (Galaxy 10.1) - it blithely suggests I should replace it... I have done the troubleshoot connection on Kies - this doesn't make any difference, and it is only very intermittent that the connection works.... Are there any other drivers available for the Galaxy please? Or software (Android version of iTunes) which would help... TIA Bryden (Mrs)
