I just saw this over on Sammobile. Samsung confirms prices of Gear 2 and Gear Fit | SamMobile . The Gear Fit will be $197USD and the Gear 2 will come in at $295USD. I'm prone to get the Fit myself.

Unless I'm missing something, the big thing the Fit (and some other thin fitness bands) is missing is simple ergonomics. Unless the display will change orientation when you turn your wrist to look at it, it is a total fail in my book. Who wants to read a sideways display? You either have to hold your arm straight out or fold it in like a chicken wing to read it... I'm not sure that the fact it will only work with Samsung phones is such a great thing either...
That turned into more of a rant than I intended, but it it what it is... At this point I'm still looking/waiting for the perfect integration of fitness and watch. Right now the next best hope is the Moto 360. It looks like something I'd wear, but I'm still waiting for more details on what sensors and capabilities it will end up with.

I get the sense the Fit display will have a similar display orientation to the Nike Fuelband. My wife has one of those and has no complaints about the orientation, so the generalization you're making about a failure here is probably overblown.
I suspect it will work for some and disappoint others.
I guess that's my point. Making it so you can read it like a regular watch would work for more than some, and disappoint less others. Right now you have to settle for a poorly oriented narrow band or a way to big display oriented correctly.
