Root Galaxy I9003 Rooting/Flashing

hemang

Lurker
Hello, I have purchased a Galaxy I9003 with SLCD 2 days back. Firmware 2.2.1, Baseband version I9003DDKA5, Kernel version 2.6.32.9 root@SE-S605 #1, Build number FROYO.DDKB2.
I am somewhat familiar with Linux as I have set up one machine but otherwise a noob. I have some questions :
1) Are the instructions on rooting/flashing for I9000 also applicable to I9003?
2) I have rooted my phone with SuperOneClick v1.7. Without doing anythingfurther , what advantage I have as superuser. I read that I can download non-market apps, but from where?
3) What is flashing? As I understand, the phone has an internal memory and also internal SD card? What are the contents on these and which of these does flashing affect?
4) I also read that Lagfix is required but I dont feel any lag in my phone!! Is it because I have upgraded to Samsung Galaxy SLCD from a very basic mobile? Will I get any improvement with Lagfix?
5) What is ROM, I keep on reading that there are ROMS available for Galaxy S. Is this the software? Is this available for I9003 also?
6) I have installed Titanium Backup after I rooted and backed up the apps on the SD card and then copied on my PC. Is this okay?
7) If I have to make any changes, will I lose all the apps currently installed? Can I revert back?

Sorry if the questions sound silly.

Read the sticky FAQ thread for a (not so) quick reference.

The two phones might look identical from the outside, but you should already be aware that the insides are completely different. Different CPU, different memory chips, different screen, etc. So roms that work on the I9000 most probably won't work on the I9003.

I just said bye bye to Symbian and joined the android bandwagon

I have SG I9003, currently running on Firmware 2.2.1

Okay i have 3 doubts

1) is 2.3 (gingerbread) released (beta/official) for I9003 ??
2) is there any custom ROM for I9003 - if yes please help me out (tried Nandroid - i guess it does not support I9003)
3) is it worth the effort to go for custom ROM from 2.2.1 or just wait for 2.3

Thanks in advance

@snapper.fishes, thanks for the info. So will there be no further update on this phone from Samsung? Why do you think so?
I have some more questions :
1) After a week of customization, I found that the phone is linked to my google account which I had entered initially. I don't really like this. Can I make a new dummy account and change to it without "hard reset"?
2) If I do hard reset, what do I actually lose?
3) I have rooted the phone and can take backup with TitaniumBackup. Can I copy this folder to PC, do hard reset, setup with the new dummy google account, copy folder back to to the internal SD card, use Titanium backup to restore apps+data. Will I get back all my customizations like home screen and simi folders?
5) Or should I copy the full Internal SD card contents to PC and paste them back after reset?
6) Is it possible to setup a dummy google account and then change it's password so that the phone does not have access to this account. Then if I setup my main google account as the second account, can I access the market?
7) It is better to install all apps through apks so that they are not linked to my account?
8) Is there any way to image the "internal" memory like we do on a laptop?
9) In case something goes wrong, can I get stock firmware (India) for my phone. My phone details are as under :
Samsung Galaxy GT-I9003 (SLCD)
Firmware 2.2.1
Baseband version I9003DDKA5
Kernel version 2.6.32.9 root@SE-S605 #1
Build number FROYO.DDKB2

Thanks for the help, appreciate it.

ya know this is a great forum but telling people to RTFM is sooo 20th century!

i've read TFM and if you want people to actually read you have to make it easier to read! as it is, it looks like someone shit on it.

I still read all the manuals when I buy a new device. And I am not that old.... I think. But yeah that's one hell of a horrible FAQ IMO, but it's the best out there, and I don't really fell like going through all the effort of rewriting one myself.

@hemang: That's a long list of questions.... I will get back to you later. Kinda late here.

1) I did a bit of digging around, and found out that in older android phones you can reset your primary gmail account just by wiping the data of "Google Apps". However, this no longer works in newer android phones, not to mention you can't even find "Google Apps" any more in settings. I tried wiping the data for Gmail, market, etc. But none of it worked. So I am afraid you will have to perform a hard reset.

2) All your market apps and app data. You won't lose anything on your internal or external SD.

3) No need to copy the TB folder to your desktop. A hard reset doesn't touch the internal SD. Upon restore your simi folder contents will be recovered, but you will have to set up your home screens again. Currently there's a limitation in android that stops your from restoring widgets. Your app icons will survive the recovery, but your widgets won't. This applies to all launchers.

4) Where question 4? :P

5) Again, there's no need. But you might as well make one just in case your internal SD gets corrupted somehow in the future.

6) I can't remember what happened the last time I changed my gmail password, but I think it just gave me a log in failed error and asked me to re-enter the password without any option to change the account. Otherwise your phone will need to automatically uninstall all the paid market apps.

7) Even if you install the apks manually, if they are available on the market, they will still show up under "downloaded apps" after a while.

8) You can... but you will need some knowledge on adb. Go to the guide thread and look for the link on how to back up efs. Part of the procedure involves backing up the efs folder as an img file.

9) You can find them here Login - www.SamFirmware.com You will need to create an account to view the page, but it's worth it. All official/leaked Samsung firmware can be found on the site.

Thanks for the reply. I reset my phone and would like to share my experience.
1) As I read on another forum, I backed up Data and Apps separately using Titanium Backup. First I backed up the data, copied the folder to my external SD card and renamed it. Then I deleted the folder on the internal SD card. After this I backed up the apps and copied and renamed that folder to external card also. I also backed up contacts using Kies.
2) I reset the phone and it came back to original state, all data and customization lost, but the google account also gone as I wanted.
3) Copied the Titanium Backup folder back to internal SD card and rebooted. Then restored all Apps+System Data and rebooted. Due to the free version on Titanium Backup I had to confirm install each of the 58 apps manually, else it went smoothly. Rebooted and I had all apps back. The widgets on homescreen were lost but was no big deal. However, the google account was back too.
4) Again reset my phone and this time restored only the apps and then contacts with Kies. It didn't take much time to set the system settings but now I had no google account, which is what I wanted.
5) Setup everything as required and took separate system data and apps backup at this stage. Now I havw a system data backup without any apps and with the settings I need.
6) Tried to open a new google account from my laptop but it was asking for mobile number which I did not want to provide. So created a new account from phone itself (Using WiFi) and there was no requirement of mobile number.

So now I have the account I want but Market is only showing the apps I downloaded after I reset, all the earlier apps are not showing. Does not matter at present.
