Galaxy Nexus?

So what is the big deal about the galaxy nexus? I mean aside from ICS (which we will probably get) and vanilla android with no TouchWiz, the Epic Touch seems very comparable specwise, and even superior in some ways. I mean, the only thing I see is the NFC chip, which I don't care about, and a larger screen, my screen is plenty large. Am I missing something?

I don't think so. Unless you absolutely need ICS, I personally think the S2 is the superior phone.

Well, you are missing the fact that its much higher resolution at 1280x720 with a superior super AMOLED display. That alone would make some switch. Quite a jump compared to the ET4G's 800x480 standard AMOLED display. Also, the dual core processor (OMAP4) has hardware acceleration that the Exynos processor in the ET4G does not have. That will be very useful for HD video and other HD graphics related processing. It also features a dual channel memory controller. That may be another big reason someone may switch. Its worth noting though that the GPU used in the Galaxy Nexus is older and considered inferior to the one in the ET. I think a good dogfight between the two would settle it, too close to call until we see more of the Nexus.

If im not mistaken... I'm pretty sure the SGS2 has a Super Amoled Plus display.. not a regular amoled display. Other than the fact that the Galaxy Nexus has a higher resolution, they're pretty evenly matched up to be honest. Either would be excellent phones and it'll be down to whatever you feel you want.

My friend absolutely adores my SGS2 but also wants a galaxy nexus.. choices choices!

This is correct, the resolution on the Galaxy Nexus is superior, but the screen technology is inferior. Plus the Nexus has a pentile display.

I didn't realize the difference in the color vibrance until I put the Epic Touch that I return next to my wife original Epic, even she was astounded by the difference in color "pop".

I did hate the fact that I (among few) could see the lack of resolution density on the Epic Touch. However if I can in the same way see that pentile screen grid, I imagine I would choose the Epic Touch for better colors.

I thought that ICS will bring hardware acceleration to GSII as well. Is that not so? Will it depend on the processor or apply to all phones?

I would be more concerned about IF the GSII will actually get ICS than what would happen when it did. With the SGS III and Nexus coming out, Samsung has little incentive to put much into the SGS II when they can create a fever for the new generation by leaving it be.

As it is, the SGS II is considered top of the line, Samsung would be inclined to feel they don't need to improve it.

Im actually not that concerned about getting ics or not. The improvements are not that great to make me "have to" have it. I love the phone the way it is.

Who's going to wait for Samsung? Those of us who really want it will root and rom it, probably a few days after its out.

Uh, what on earth are you talking about?

1. The GSII E4GT has a superior Super Amoled Plus display, while the Galaxy Nexus is just Super Amoled pentile display.

2. The GSII/E4GT uses Touchwiz 4.0 so it has gratuitious hardware acceleration throughout. That is why it flows so smoothly compared to phones by everyone else. All that fluidity and cool effects are done with hardware acceleration, right down to the browser. There is a reason why people talk about how smooth the GSII is.

3. The Galaxy Nexus uses a 2 year old SGX540 GPU, which is inferior to the Exynos and Mali400 used in the GSII. Plus the Omap SOC used in the Galaxy Nexus is the same as what is used in cheap Archos tablets. Yay?

4. Combining an HD display with a cheap GPU is a good idea since when? Also we've been down this road before where people talk about how great HD displays are on a phone, but the GSII has still looked better for a number of reasons. Retina is probably the best phone hi-res screen in the business, and I still prefer the GSII screen.

I have no faith in the current gen of SOC's or GPU when it comes to HD displays.

Basically it's just better cause it is guaranteed to get the next Android update. When everyone (who didn't root and flash a ROM that is) is complaining that Samsung didn't push out the update to Jelly Bean (or whatever they call the next version of Android out), then people will be glad they purchased the Galaxy Nexus.

The S2 is a solid device however and with custom roms it will more than match the Galaxy Nexus.

For all the hype surrounding the Nexus (prime) I really thought the announced specs were a letdown. As far as I'm concerned about the only benefit to the nexus is the higher resolution screen. The "plus" screen in the Epic Touch sounds better in pretty much every way except resolution.

I like what they are doing with ICS but ICS will come to the Epic touch either from Sprint/Samsung or via the devs.

I'm probably in the minority but I also like having touchwiz/sense on the phone since I can always load a base gingerbread/ICS rom if I want a stock experience but it's far more unusual to be able to load touchwiz/sense on a stock android rom. There's functionality included in these manufacturer overlays that google still hasn't added to android... seemingly basic things like widgets with unread email count for non-gmail accounts, t9 dial support in the dialer, etc..
