galaxy s 2.1 help please

hi all noob here
i have a galaxys gt i9000 with 2.1 firmware
is there a laymans way to upgrade firmware? i mainly want to run skype on it or is there another way to get skype working

Install Kies on your PC, plug in your phone via USB. Click on "update" on Kies.
