Help Galaxy S Captivate Suddenly stopped responding to USB connection (Just Charges)

My 6 month old Galaxy S Captivate was fne just until 2 days back and yesterday when I plugged in the USB cable, the phone just would not respond to it by showing the dialogue box for selecting the connection mode. The Compute also does not detect the phone in anyway.

I did try plugging and un-plugging multiple number of times, re-booting, changing the USB mode from PDA to modem, re-installing KIES, re-installing drivers, booting the PC etc. but in vain.

Whenevr I plug in the cable I see the charging starts and nothing else happens. I am not too sure if the USB connector has become loose all of a sudden. Has anyone faced this problem before?

I see that once in a while if I insert the cable into the phone in a partial manner or holding it on one side or other the connection box pops up and then immediately the computer says driver not installed properly and then nothing happens even if I re-install the driver.

Any help would be appreciated. I was about to upgrade to 2.3 and that's not happening and also I do not expect a 6 month old phone to show loose connector issues.

you can try different USB ports. Wouldn't be the first time I've seen a phone respond to one port and not another.

you can also try a different USB cable. its possible something went wrong with it. Again, this wouldn't be the first time I've read that the cable went bad and would only charge the phone.

Thanks nyydynasty. I tired different ports and a different laptop too. I guess I can try a new cable and hope that solves the issue.

Does the usb connector on the phone get loose over time for this model?

The device needs to be in debugging mode

Settings> Applications > Development > USB debugging (turn this on)

Also, if the drivers are installed correctly, your PC should give you a confirmation balloon that new hardware is recognized when the device is connected. If there is none, reinstall drivers. They are avlb at Samsung support

Lastly, to get into downloading mode in the captivate, hold the volume up/down buttons at the same time before inserting the USB cable. This starts the download/update.

Best of luck and let us know your results..

Hi Smashed. I tried to get into debug mode and it did enter. But the PC would still not detect it.

All I see is sometimes when I insert the cable, the PC will just throw the baloon saying driver installation failed. This is why I guess a loose contact.

After I was able to go to the debug mode once, I could not re-connect it again.

Lastly I tried but was not able to enter the 3 button download mode. I read somewhere that not all phones support the download mode. So I am guessing my phone does not for some reason.

Have you figured this out yet? I have the same problem, its almost as if the port is stretched out and the charger doesnt fit?

Been having the same problem for the past week or two until just last night. USB would charge, but phone and computer both failed to recognize USB connection. Last night, after unplugging it from my laptop my battery status suddenly dropped to 14%. I Rebooted to see if that would fix it and the battery completely discharged. I got it to respond to USB cable when it was inserted and pushed slightly forward a few times but never long enough to charge the battery and now it won't charge no matter what or how I hook it up. Have tried 4 usb cables, 3 wall adapters and 3 car chargers but nothing works.
