Help Galaxy S: Copying text/cursor

I find it hard to believe that the stock apps don't allow you to copy text directly from e-mails/SMS's. Has anyone found a way around this? Is there somewhere we can make suggestions to the developers of android about this very basic feature? I have also noticed that the blue needle used to copy text/move cursor does not always work e.g. Does not come up in Google search bar nor did it come up in this box. Only in apps...
