Galaxy S ~ Froyo Update

Uh huh. Looks like a user leak, not an FCC spec sheet or leak. FCC appears nowhere in that link, or at android community, or in the picture. Unless i'm blind...

Sorry I misunderstood. I thought you were doubting the existence of the device on Sprint. Didn't know you were looking for FCC verification of the device itself. I thought the sprint logo on the picture would be enough to prove that it exists. In any case, it's here as the Sprint Epic 4G. Should be in FCC soon

HTC have finally announced Android 2.2 for the Desire..... but it's not coming until Q3 2010.
Okay, what's the betting forecast now on Samsung pulling the same?

It sounds so far away when you say "not coming until Q3 2010" but it just means it won't come tomorrow. :)

I expect Samsung to get it out during Q3 as well, although I'm not so sure it will be during the first month.

Samsung says all Galaxy S phones will get Android 2.2 -- Engadget

"Samsung has mercifully confirmed at an event in New York this evening that all Galaxy S versions -- including the Captivate, Epic 4G, Vibrant, and Fascinate -- will be receiving updates to Android 2.2 Froyo later this year and offer compatibility with Flash 10.1. All of the devices will be shipping with Android 2.1 out of the gate, so considering that Froyo's already launched, we're sure there'll be no shortage of pressure to get the updates fast-tracked. Sprint says it won't be a long wait on the Epic, but otherwise, we don't have any time frames at this point."

Someone on a Swedish Android forum had spoken to an old friend of his who works in sales at Samsung. According to him the plan was to get FroYo out to the SGS in August and the firmware update during July.

That's of course no guarantee for that they will actually be able to stick to their plan but I guess it at least makes it unnecessary to hope for 2.2 in the coming month.

guys, i guess we can wait for the new devices to come in with the firmware & then see if the firmware gets a chance to make it to SamsungFirmware & flash our way to the GTI9000 series... Odin i mean

I have updated the firmware with JP2, JP3 and JXP. presently my I9000 (Samsung Galaxy S) is running on JP3 as I found installing JXP takes back to 2.1 eclair. Though I found JP2 is having some problem but this JP3 is working perfect and the battery time has increased quite better. The GPS lock is yet to test and will update. You can see the version quickly by thyping on dial pad *#1234# this will show the firmware version and the date of the version. Mine JP3 shows
1. PDA: I9000XXJP3
Phone: I9000XXJP3
CSC : I9000XXJP3
Build Info: 2010.07

I believe a newer version is already out and need to do some research. One caution during upgrading the firmware all applications installed by user will get removed and need re-installation

Can you teach me how to go for JP3?
Mine is still JH1. My benchmark is at 838. thanks a lot.

So will Froyo, whenever it comes out, help fix the wifi connection issues? My wife's SGS will not connect to any wifi unless the phone is virtually sitting on the router - is this a hardware issue or do you think froyo will improve this?

I've not heard of the Wifi being that badly effected. Normally it is to do with the signal losing the connection where you then have to stop and restart Wifi to get it working again... that should be fixed with the Froyo & other fixes.
What your talking of here sounds different.
What's it like when it connects to a different router, is it the same?
If so an option would be to reformat and try again.... If it still performs badly as you are saying then yes, it would appear to be a hardware issue.

When i bought this phone both Vodafone and samsung said it would be updated to froyo. If it cant be it was mis-sold and can be returned after any period. They would not let that happen. they would release a crap version of it before allowing that to happen

Samsung are more botherd about the galaxy tab these days because 2.2 runs ok on that and release. ...the galaxy tab and the galaxy s more or less the same but ones a bit bigger

The issue we have with wifi is that it just wont find a signal - it can detect that a wireless network is there, but it wont connect as it says the signal is too poor. At home we have to virtually be next to the router for it to connect!

when you say reformat, are you talking about reformatting the whole phone? Is that easy, and would it lose everything that is on there already?

thanks

Reformatting would mean losing ALL Data on the phone, so a backup is recommended.
I use My Backup Pro which backs up all my contacts/SMS/etc.
To reset you can use Settings/Privacy/Factory Data Reset

So would this also mean that any apps that we have loaded will be lost as well, or is it just data?

Thanks

Yes, you would loose everything. That's why I mentioned to use My Backup Pro.

What My Backup Pro does is give you the option of backing up EITHER Application data or system data (inc contacts, SMS, Calendar, etc).

The way you do it is you first run the program and select say backup Applications. This then backs up your entire application list.
Afterwards you then run it again and this time select to backup the system data.
What this means you end up with two RAR files in a folder named 'Reware'.
These two files are the backup files.

Apologies to all for being Off Topic here.
